[arch-dev-public] toolchain update

Hi, I have just put up a couple of small TODO lists for the toolchain rebuild I will do sometime in the next week now the the python rebuild is slightly delayed. I will replace libelf with elfutils as this allows the building of the useful tools/perf. There is also a ppl update which has a few soname bumps. There is also a gcc update and a glibc release tagged (both bug fix releases). The rebuilds are small and I expect no issues... Allan

[arch-dev-public] Python-3.x transition with python-2.7 update

Hi all, Here comes a rebuild so large that our TODO list had trouble handling it! Hopefully all packages are now in the rebuild list.... At a total of 518 packages long, it puts the combined libpng/libjpeg rebuild to shame. Python-2.7 has been releases and will be the last 2.x official release of python. So it is time to switch to python-3.x as our /usr/bin/python and python-2.7 as our /usr/bin/python2. See http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DeveloperWiki:Python_Todo_List for all the details about how to achieve this. It is actually not that hard. I had a system converted when python-3.1 was released as a test run. The main key is to build packages in a clean chroot so that they detect and point their files to /usr/bin/python2. Some packages are stupid and require a sed at the end of packaging to fix that. Because this rebuild is crazy stupid, I would like to plan when it is going to occur. We will need to clear out [testing] as much as possible over the coming week or two (what is happening with perl...). Also, a new KDE is a the beginning of next month so I would not want to conflict with that. Any other major rebuilds on the way? Should we do this in a separate repo? Allan

This new build fixes the b43 trouble lots of users have been having. This package is NOT in testing (2.6.35 currently resides there), but at: http://dev.archlinux.org/~thomas/kernel26/ Please sign off (also, please someone with the b43 problem test if this is fixed).

[arch-dev-public] Mono release 2.8 with major changes is coming (soon)

Hi, I know that many of you don't use mono, but anyway a new major release is coming with some changes which may affect packages which depends on mono. I have read the changelog draft of mono 2.8 (you can find it here: http://mono-project.com/Release_Notes_Mono_2.8) and there are some significant changes, like the removing of .NET 1.1 profile. Normally that shouldn't be a problem, because most applications are using .NET 2.0 profile and not the old 1.1, but who knows if some applications using the old one. If an application uses the old 1.1 profile it will be automatically switched to the 2.0 profile and a warning should appear. Seven old and deprecated libraries will be removed from the mono release, to be precisly: * ByteFX.Data * Mono.Data * Microsoft.JScript and Microsoft.Vsa * FirebirdSql.Data.Firebird * Mono.Data.SybaseClient * Mono.Data.SqliteClient Mono 2.8 will ship a new garbage collector (SGen), I will activate it by default. You can change that by setting an environment variable (information will follow at release day). The new release includes 4 new libraries from Microsoft directly, they are licensed und MS-PL or Apache 2 Open Source Licenses, so that shouldn't be a problem for us. Another critical change will be the ThreadPool behavior. This has been changed and will potentially break existing applications. I have written in my "Away" email that you can update my packages, but please DO NOT UPDATE the mono packages during my vacation. I will update mono after my vacation (if it will be released in that time). As always I try to do the update as smooth as possible, but this time there are some real big changes in the new release which may not "allow" this. Sorry for the long email and such specific information about the new mono release, but I think it's necessary for such a major release. -Daniel

Time for vacation, for very long vacation. :) I will be in Canada, more precisely travelling around in Alberta and BC. I won't have internet access during that time, so I'm not able to read mails or fix/update packages. Feel free to fix or update my packages. -Daniel

I would hope since Arch is a smaller project it can bit more transparent in regards to this. Also it will take the load off other contributors. What is going on with the perl-5.12 update in [testing]? Every few days I see rebuilds for a couple of packages with "perl-5.12 rebuild" as the reason yet we have no rebuild list. How much more needs done? Is there any schedule for this making it to the main repos? Allan
