Hi, I'm stepping down as last remaining releng member. It's not so much lack of time, it's more about lack of mental energy/interest. Some other devs (and Gerardo) are already taking good care of archiso, Thomas manages to patch up the releng scripts every time they break, and now there's some interest in installer scripts again, so I guess now is a good time for me to throw the towel. I've been pondering doing this for already a long time, I even wrote a few resignation mails at some points, but always discarded them before sending. AIF is arguably an over-engineered piece of software, but only because it aimed to make it "dead-easy" for users to do installations - even complicated ones - (and not just interactive, but also automated ones) which I still think is a noble goal worth pursuing, but we're too small of a team to maintain it, and me being the only one who understands it doesn't help either. If it would have been written in python it could have been more elegant and simple and might have had a very different life (with more interest from the community/other devs). I've definitely learned a lot from it, and have a bunch of ideas on how things can be done better if one would like to pursue the goals that aif pursues, but lack the interest in devoting more energy. Although I might be interested to help out if others take the lead. I would like to thank everyone who's ever contributed to Arch Linux in one way or another (some of you guys are very dedicated), There's also the guys at (open)suse who are doing lovely projects (mirrorbrain, autoinst, openQA, ...) and who have tried to work with us, I regret not being able to giving them the attention they deserve. (there's the autobuilds, the openQA automatic tests, the iso feedback webapp, which are by themselves useful but we haven't been able so far to tie them together. I still think we can achieve the autobuild+autotest+autorelease system I know some of us are dreaming of) I also look back happily on speaking with everyone in the AL community I've ever met, I never met somebody I didn't like. My personal hilights being Froscon 2009 (http://dieter.plaetinck.be/froscon_2009_afterthoughts -- check the picture of Gerhard and I!) and Archcon 2010 (http://dieter.plaetinck.be/back_from_canada_archcon.html) which was not only great for the Arch love, my trip to Canada was one of the best trips of my life, and I got to meet Dusty, who I now consider a close personal friend. good luck with AL and with your personal lives. Hi guys, As of linux-3.5 almost all in-kernel modules are autoloaded on demand, so the need for manually specifying modules to load in MODULES (or otherwise) is almost gone. However, for out-of-tree modules, this might not yet be the case. For this purpose, we now have very simple mechanisms for packages to instruct initscripts (or systemd) to load (or blacklist) modules at boot. In other words, rather than package "foo" having a post-install message saying "Please add foo_module to MODULES in rc.conf and blacklist bar_module" it could simply install /usr/lib/modules-load.d/foo.conf: foo_module /usr/lib/modprobe.d/foo.conf: blacklist bar_module The reasoning being that an admin is almost certainly not going to want to install a package and then not follow the post-install instructions. Conversely, on un-install (s)he is likely to want to revert these changes. On the rare occasions the admin does not want the standard behavior, it can be overridden by writing (possibly empty) files to /etc/mod{ules-load,probe}.d/foo.conf Is this something we'd like to do? -t PS: A quick look shows that at least vhba, virtualbox and fcpci could benefit from this (though of course the benefits should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis).

Hi all, gcc-4.7 introduced some c++11 support, but unfortunately this resulted in a changed ABI for files compiled with c++98/03 support and those complied with c++11. So, if a library used c++11 but linked to a library using c++98, there could be crashes due to incompatibilities between these. The gcc-4.7.1-5 package uses a snapshot with the needed patches to fix this issue. However, c++11 code compiled with any earlier 4.7.x version possibly be incompatible with c++11 code compiled with gcc-4.7.1-5 and above and anything compiled with c++98/03. I have created a TODO list that includes everything linking to libstdc++.so and that was built since gcc-4.7.0 entered the repos. It is a big list, but only software that used --std=c++11 when compiling need recompiled. Look at your build output (you do keep the logs for future reference...) and decide if your package needs recompiled or not. Hi guys, I have pushed initscripts-2012.07.3 to testing. Summary of changes: * Add support for systemd's crypttab syntax * Deprecate our old crypttab syntax, but keep supporting it * All variables in rc.conf can now be left unset and will default to something sensible * Deprecate all non-initscripts-specific settings from rc.conf, and remove them from the standard rc.conf. The standard rc.conf can now be used unchanged on a simple system (earlier this would give network errors). * Rework the rc.conf manpage, adding examples and suggestions for replacement for the deprecated settings * No longer hard-code Arch-specific welcome message (this is mostly so our various derivatives so they can use /etc/os-release rather than patching rc.sysinit) * Drop /etc/conf.d/wireless. It has been deprecated for a long time, so no longer ship the file * Several bugfixes I'll leave it in testing for some time to make sure that the crypttab changes went smoothly. I'll make sure to only push this to core after the next systemd is in core (it is not yet in testing, but has been released upstream), as that will add the keyfile-offset= option to crypttab. If you agree, I'll post a news item about the change to the recommended config options in both crypttab and rc.conf. Cheers, Tom

Hi, we really need to write a news istem about new isos etc.. Here are some points we should mention: * removed aif for now * looking for aif contributors and/or maintainer (need to ask Dieter if he likes to guide applicants or never wants to toch aif again -)) * new arch install scripts * keyring is initialized on bootup; signature verification is enabled by default. keyring is copied to target system in pacstrap * need community help with documentation * only one single iso (for both arches, no core repo included) * regular (can we agree on monthly here?) releases * we should mention that the iso itself is signed and that it really should be verified Anything I missed?
