Those are legit concerns that still stand today. Fortunately, since recent WSL versions, there are alternative methods to distribute WSL images outside from the Microsoft Store that are not subject to those trademark problems / concerns.
For the record, I'm in favor of distributing WSL images on the Microsoft Store, as it would help make Arch Linux and our packages more accessible to more humans (from how I understand it).
I'm not really concerned about the trademark, I understand the corporate legalese and why this is necessary, but it's not like we're transferring over the archlinux.org domain, or them naming their next operating system release Arch Linux 12.
Does anybody know how Ubuntu dealt with this?

Hey kp, Thanks for sharing some thoughts :) Currently, it seems like a majority of people are uncomfortable with the eventual implications that the distribution of such an image from the Microsoft Store could have on our trademark. For what it's worth, Fedora shares the same concerns [1]. As such, I think we should keep the Microsoft Store out of the specification's scope of the current proposal / RFC. However, I'm happy to revisit this subject as a milestone for the future. In any case, given how divisive the topic is, it will probably need to be discussed in its own separate RFC anyway. I don't know how other distributions (e.g. Ubuntu) dealt with this, but I can try to establish contacts with them on that matter if we decide to dig into it at a later point. Christian / Shibumi also offered to share the old related mail thread from the previous (5 years old) attempt to distribute a WSL image on the Microsoft Store. That would definitely be useful in that context. [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/FedoraWSL#Summary -- Regards, Robin Candau / Antiz
