[arch-dev-public] [draft] pkgstats: contribution was never that easy
Hi, here is an announcement draft based on Allan's proposal: Annoying bug you filed not fixed? Waiting on a package to be updated? If only there was some way you could help out and improve everybody's favourite Linux distribution... (in case you were wondering, I was meaning Arch). Wait! There is! Just install the pkgstats package, run it as a user and help the Arch dev's prioritize their efforts. Come on, all the cool kids are doing it. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

Great !! I already tested and it worked great. Pierre, im just curious how you are receiving user responses, i see it sends the output of a pacman -Q, but how do you get/use it ? Thanks a lot, it is really great too =) What about sending the user@hostname info to it too ? I guess it can help to prevent repeated data (pardon if im talking bullshit), just thought about that thinking in the same user sending pkgstats everyday so we will end the month with at least 30 packages flags. -- Douglas Soares de Andrade -- Python, Django, Zope e Plone == Archlinux Trusted User and Developer - dsa ** Quote: Old programmers never die; they exit to a higher shell.

At first: I disabled the Serverpart until I have done some chagnes. (I just thought it would be cool to not only track official packages but all; this could be helpfull to see what is popular in AUR). I'll send an mail when it finally can be used. I save the following: * The users arch, ip and time of submission * I count every package per arch
Thanks a lot, it is really great too =)

There is nothing we can do prevent anyone from abusing it. But I hope Archers are all cool people. :-) And: the more people will submit their lists the better are the results. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

"the Arch developers", I would just spell it out and there is no apostrophe (no possession here).
it.

A few minor edits: Annoying bug you filed not fixed? Waiting on a package to be updated? If only there was some way you could help out and improve everybody's favourite Linux distribution... (in case you are wondering, I mean Arch). Wait! There is! Just install the pkgstats package (pacman -Sy pkgstats), run it as a user and help the Arch devs prioritize their efforts. Come on, all the cool kids are doing it. You can be like them!

"run it as a user" -> "run the /usr/bin/<whatever> script as a user" ? Other than that, it looks good to me. Might want to include some simple docs in the pkgstats package at some point, so people know what's going on.

Yes, there is some space for improvements. But this can be done later. At first let's see how many users would use it and what problems might occour. And of course I'll need to write somthing to print some pretty graphs etc. ;-) I have truncated the db, so everything is ready for production now. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de
