[arch-dev-public] Audio packages
Hi all, Do we have a dev here that wants to spend some time with the audio packages? They have not received much love lately... The jackbeat update requires moving portaudio from [community]. We also have ardour that is quite out-of-date but requires adding several deps to the repos. I updated jack-audio-connection-kit, but it also needs a rework of is rc.d script to actually make it useful and I have not had time to address yet (if anybody wants to do this contact me for the details). So, what do we do? Is there a dev who has time and interest to take these over? Otherwise do we bring someone onboard to maintain these packages or encourage someone in the arch-audio group to become a TU and move them to community? Allan

Maybe we should pull on a dev specifically interested in audio on linux for things like this. Me, I'm happy as long as I can hear it.

Well, it appears we have no takers for the audio related packages so maybe bring someone on to do this is a good idea. Allan

Allan
Sure, that way they will be given a good care.

Anyone care to right up a draft for a news item? Or do we have anyone in mind?

Are we sure we want to bring someone on for this? Traditionally, audio development is a separate community project (ubuntustudio, for example) due to the need for a custom kernel. It seems to me its a bit outside the scope of our development focus. Having said that, if there's somebody available who actually wants to do this stuff (as compared to "I want to be an Arch dev, then I'll be leet" -- we know how quickly that wears off...), I have no problem with them being on the team. I just think it might be better to see it as a successful community project first. Dusty

Well I think Allan is talking more about the audio related utilities in extra already that are part of gnome/KDE and the like.

I forwarded the initial post on the AUR ML in case a TU is interested. I believe Allan is talking about the audio apps NOT part of KDE or Gnome as those are already maintained by the kde/gnome devs. Unless I'm mistaken, we're talking about standalone audio apps: ardour, rosegarden, fluidsynth, jackbeat, etc. Most of these are orphaned. If none of the current dev/TU is interested, we could ask an interested user to apply to become TU and move the packages to community. Obviously, he would have to pass the TU voting procedure. If the prospective maintainer doesn't have what it takes to become a TU, then we probably don't want him on the dev team. Of course, we can add him straight to the dev team depending on who is it.

Exactly what I was talking about. Allan
