[arch-dev-public] Arch Linux Logo Contest - RULES
Hey again! Okay, the consensus seems to be that having a logo competition is a good idea, so we're having a competition! The forum thread I linked in the other ML thread[1] has been teeming with activity, and many proposals have already been submitted before we've even done anything[2]! I have a feeling this will turn out quite nicely. I'm starting a new thread to keep things organized. This thread is now for discussion of the rules of the logo contest. I propose simple rules: . Anyone can submit as many concepts as they wish . Entry is freeform, no need to base it on current logo . All submitted entries must be under a freely-modifiable license, or be willing to transfer rights of the logo to Arch. Per submission, we want: . SVG or PNG logo at 128x128 . Palette used (16 colours max) . Simplified 2-colour version (b&w, for instance) . Scaled version(s) (16x16 required, anything between 128x128 and 16x16 also cool) Foxbunny, from the forums, made a proposed submission sheet[3] and gave an example submission[4] - do we want to make use of these? As they currently are, or with some modification? Please comment on these rules - I'd like to pounce on the energy in the forums while it's still there. :) [1] http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=38051 [2] http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=290216 [3] http://img292.imageshack.us/my.php?image=submissionformjl2.png [4] http://img148.imageshack.us/my.php?image=submissionsampleul1.png -- Travis
I really need to proof-read my crap before I hit "send".
. Palette used (16 colours max) What I mean here is 16 main colours. Gradients allowed, as was mentioned in the other ML thread, but main colours of the gradient (from A to B through C) should be part of the 16-colour palette.
I also wanted to ask - do we want to _specify_ this palette? Give it to the community and say "pick from these colours"? -- Travis

Yeah! You should proofread, you misspelled "color" like 5 times!
/me snickers
You know, until recently, Arch was overlorded by a Canadian, and colour was not only cool, but the preferred spelling. Now we're run by Americans. What's the world coming to? Heh... kidding of course. So off topic. -- Travis

Nicely worded. I couldn't have put it better.

Looks good to me - make sure to note than anything "extra" such as banners and the like are not discouraged, and may help the decision seeing the logo in context.

Yeah, I like the submission sheet. It'd keep things uniform.

Absolutely. Thanks so much for this. Here in OSS land, motivation is easy to kill. If we overtalk this, we'll do just that - kill the motivation of anyone who would have done any real work. What about time frame? How long for submissions, how long for voting, etc?

Oh, good call - I was rolling time frames over in my mind before I wrote the mail, but forgot to include them. I was thinking maybe two weeks for submissions, or up to a month - basically giving time for those people who can't crank out 10 ideas a day to come up with something and give it some love. As for judging, that will be the job of the Developers. We take the submissions, make an [arch-dev-public] email with links to all of them, and everybody adds their +1s to the ones they like. At the end, the one with the most +1s wins. In the event of a tie, all equally-voted logos will again be submitted, and devs will choose the one they like best of that group. In the event of ANOTHER tie, we open the voting up to the community (or maybe open it up to the community in the event of the first tie?) -- Travis
