[arch-dev-public] [kde-unstable] re-enabled
Hi ML, only let you know the repository kde-unstable is again active. I packaged with Pierre KDE 4.3 beta2; at the moment packages are more big then previous because we enabled the DEBUG build option, but we will disable it soon: there are few vantages and many disadvantages to keep it. Pierre talked with Allan who said that pacman 3.3 will be out soon, so we are working to split KDE packages. Will be nice to have splitted packages in time to the new KDE release. Have a good day Cheers -- Andrea `BaSh` Scarpino Arch Linux Developer

I just added the first try of splitted KDE packages (x86_64) to the kde- unstable repo. The i686 ones will be built overnight. I switched to a svn snapshot so we have a better chance to catch all the latest bugs. -) Be aware that at the moment a smooth update is not possible. One problem is that you cannot tell pacman to install a group from a special repo. If we find a good solution for this issue we could provide some kind of update script/package. I should be able to provide an update script by tomorrow. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

These are still debug builds I suppose? Ronald

No, they are stripped again. The resulting packages were more than three times as big and compile time increased a lot, too. And moste back traces I have seen weren't that usefull because other libs like qt, glib2 or even glibc don't have debug symbols. Just a side note: xz compression will reduce the package size problem a little. kdelibs with gz was about 100MB while compressed with xz "only" about 50MB. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

I have added two possible optios to the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/DeveloperWiki:Splitting_KDE#Update_path The script is quite evil and might break a lot. So any ideas are more than welcome. The problem in general: * Files have been moved arround (e.g. icons are in a separate package) -> a normal update results in file conflicts * Some packages have been replaced by groups of the same name (e.g. kdeedu is now a group) -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

I just got a brilliant idea: Let pacman handle all these. So I added a set of packages which will make the transition from our current KDE package to the splitted one really smooth. As a side effect they can be used by people who want to keep the current "monster" packages. By using those meta packages possible new packages will automatically installed on major updates. Another bonus is that we don't need to recompile third party packages which depend on certain KDE modules right now. (e.g. k3b, yakuake...) See the self generating PKGBUILD at http://repos.archlinux.org/viewvc.cgi/kde- meta/kde-unstable/PKGBUILD?view=markup I'll put that into kde-unstable soon. Let's see if that really works. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

I'll put that into kde-unstable soon. Let's see if that really works. I just tested this, and it works perfectly the upgrade was so smooth. So far kde 4.3 is a great improvement, it does have some bugs and annoyances but is expected from a beta. Still kde 4.3 fixes a whole lot of bugs and annoyances introduced in kde4 since the beginning. Also it feels more polished and professional.

Did you update from 4.2 (extra)? I wonder if we should annouce this repo to get more testers. It would be good to know if updating works for or possible setups (e.g. with packages from AUR etc.) I should write an wiki article about the group and meta package stuff then. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

I should write an wiki article about the group and meta package stuff then. Sure, I upgraded from 4.2 in extra, your idea handled everything in a perfect way, I had not to intervene in the most minimal way, pacman handled everything and removed everything I didn't need.
I would advise we do announce this to get more testers, for before kde becomes final we will have a tested split packages that will work for most people.

Here is a draft: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KDE_Packages Have a look and/or edit. I am not sure if that is that well written. ;-) -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de
