[arch-dev-public] Unused websites?
Greetings, I was taking a look at the list of websites that AL provides this evening. I ran across a few sites that I had actually forgotten! Arch Artwork Gallery - art.archlinux.org Development Blog - blog.archlinux.org Just curious how much traffic these sites get, and if it would be reasonable to drop them or not. I know I haven't made much use of them in the past. My thinking is as follows: Art.archlinux.org -- This site doesn't seem to get much use. Most of the screenshot action is in the forums, in the screenshot threads. I have seen a few wallpaper threads rolling around in the forums too. blog.archlinux.org -- Not sure how visible this is, and how used it is. I *do* see posts on it, but hardly ever any comments. I do not know how much community engagement it has. If it is just "one more place for noise", perhaps we could just drop that, and post those type of news items on the front page along with other news. Thoughts? Ideas?

I agree with this. Perhaps, we could even try to move these sorts of things to the forums if they need comments.

Now that you mention it, the announcements thread in the forum is a perfect place for alot of that bloggy type news...things that don't necessarily belong on the main site front page...

Can we aggregate the threads into the Planet Arch like we have the current dev blog? Jason

Sure, punbb comes with this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/extern.php?action=new&fid=24&type=RSS which is a bit crappy, but it's a start. A few tweaks and it could aggregate the first post's text too, which I'd expect to be more useful. -S

Been a few days, and I haven't heard any real complaints to removing art and dev-blog. I think we should move forward on this. I will work on some research and hit up neotuli when I want to take the next step. (since he kind of signed himself up).

Are all artwork from art.archlinux.org already available on forums? It would be not very good to lose some nice wallpaper or logo that are not saved anywhere else. Maybe just save them somewhere before deleting? (with authors list to avoid any issues) Will planet.archlinux.org be removed too? -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

Ahh. Good thinking Roman. I will make sure to back up the artwork that is up there and put it into (at the very least) a static web dir.
Will planet.archlinux.org be removed too?
No. In fact, I have made some progress on the "arch announcement forum rss" front. This new page can be added to the Arch planet feed, so we can use the bss announcement forum in place of the dev blog, and still have things show up on the planet. http://bbs.archlinux.org/announce_rss.php

I've added it now. I hope you were expecting that done at this point. Jason

I was. I made two slight changes to the feed. 1. To get it use rss 2.0 instead of rss 0.95, so that I could move pubDate out of the feed description and into an xml tag "pubdate". 2. Fixed a small bug with fetching data from the db. I made those changes yesterday though, so as of today it should be a 'go'. If anyone finds a bug or a 'gotcha' that needs to be addressed, certainly let me know.
Ok. Moving forward on the unused website stuff.... Now that the forum announcement page is integrated with the planet feed, the only remaining issue raised is that of saving the artwork on art.archlinux.org. I have done that, and placed it here: http://archlinux.org/~eliott/gallery_backup/ I didn't save the screenshots, because I didn't feel that was something that needed saving. I will probably nuke those two sites this evening, or tomorrow, unless there are any more issues raised. Thanks.

might want to advertise the art site being removed, so people can run and grab stuff before it's gone. Likewise for the dev blog, so people can ditch it from their rss aggregators (if anyone has it). James

Thanks, Eliott. Can you also write down somewhere authors' names? -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)
