---------- Weitergeleitete Nachricht ---------- Betreff: Nvidia drivers needed a new branch Datum: Mittwoch 08 Oktober 2008 Von: ORION91 <fatespineer81@gmail.com> An: tpowa@archlinux.org Hi Tobias, i'm an arch user. Today you have update the nvidia package in extra repo but this package not works for nvidia geforce FX series, all 5xxx models. In official thread of new 177.80 driver release on nvidia linux forum<http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=120679>thera are this note: *Please note:* This NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release supports *GeForce 6xxx and newer NVIDIA GPUs*, GeForce4 and older GPUs are supported through the *96.43.xx* and *71.86.xx* NVIDIA legacy graphics drivers. GeForce FX GPUs are supported through the *173.14.xx* NVIDIA legacy graphics drivers. I think that new branch of nvidia driver is needed for the nvidia 5 FX series users. I don't know if someone already report problem to you. In this case i'm sorry for disturb! P.S. Sorry for my bad english Best regards and thanks for your job in archlinux developers community. ------------------------------------------------------- -- Tobias Powalowski Archlinux Developer & Package Maintainer (tpowa) http://www.archlinux.org tpowa@archlinux.org

Damnit nvidia! Just how many packages do you expect us to have? We currently have... what? 3 different packages? Now we need 4. *sigh*

We'll reduce it to 2 as soon as xorg migrates to extra. Somehow they think legacy drivers need legacy xorg servers.

96.xx is said to be on the way according to the forums, but it has been a long time since the last release and they are so closed about dates or releases or anything. I sure won't be buying Nvidia again by choice, but I've had this computer and graphics card for 5 years so can't complain too much. The nv driver just doesn't quite cut it though. -Dan

ATI with fglrx isn't a real option either, AMD doesn't show anything about Xorg 7.4 support. Either it takes them half a year or longer to release a driver, or they will surprise us with a working driver within the next two months. Either way, I don't like to delay Xorg 7.4 too long because of non-free drivers.

I use the free ATI drivers. They work better for my purposes. nv never performed this well. It was more like using the vesa driver.

Sorry, my fault. I did not know about this. So, Geforce FX is not supported by 96.43.xx drivers? I'll add the 173.x branch then. This is really to be going a mess. ;-) -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de
