[arch-dev-public] Arch Linux Trademark Violation
Hi, kynikos on the forum has discovered a flagrant violation of the trademarked Arch Linux logo: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=159730 The original message for those of you too lazy to follow the forum link:
I'd like to report the following as possible violations of the Arch Linux Trademark Policy: http://www.youtube.com/user/InventiveArtsHD http://steamcommunity.com/groups/InventiveArts http://www.facebook.com/pages/Inventive-Arts/418000418274710?skip_nax_wizard... http://inventivearts.daportfolio.com/gallery/789446 http://www.youtube.com/user/darkiz1337
More pages may be found with e.g.: https://www.google.com/search?q="inventive%20arts"
In case Inventive Arts is indeed linked to Arch Linux, I apologize in advance for the misunderstanding.
Given that this "movie making team" seems to be focused on posting videos of games there is a good chance that it's just some kid who doesn't understand trademark violation, so I recommend that you approach this delicately by first sending a friendly yet formal letter to request that Inventive Arts cease and desist using the Arch Linux logo. Perhaps something along the lines of the following: RE: illegal use of the Arch Linux logo It has been brought to our attention that Inventive Arts is currently using the trademarked Arch Linux logo to represent itself across various internet sites: http://www.youtube.com/user/InventiveArtsHD http://steamcommunity.com/groups/InventiveArts http://www.facebook.com/pages/Inventive-Arts/418000418274710?skip_nax_wizard... http://inventivearts.daportfolio.com/gallery/789446 http://www.youtube.com/user/darkiz1337 Use of the Arch Linux logo in this way is a violation of trademark law. We ask that Inventive Arts immediately remove the logo from all of their web pages and other media where it has been used and avoid its use in the future. If this is done then we will consider this matter resolved. If Inventive Arts persists in using the Arch Linux logo then we will be forced to pursue this issue further as required by law to defend our trademark. <insert name here> Arch Linux Legal Team legal@archlinux.org <whatever else you've got>

I appreciate your effort but this stuff should be discussed internally and not publicly. Usually Aaron takes care about stuff like that and Allan emailed him about it already. -- Ionuț

I wasn't expecting a discussion here. I don't have access to any internal dev discussions (afaik) and I wasn't sure whom to notify about this (I haven't seen any activity from Aaron in ages so I don't even know if he is still actively involved). I posted here just to make sure that the right person sees it as "nobody that matters posts on the forum", as the meme goes. Given that this is already public on the forum and that at least one user has already taken it upon himself to contact Inventive Arts directly, I felt that it was imperative to bring this to the devs' attention asap. I will close the thread for now and discuss what to do with it with the other mods to prevent further community actions while this is handled. If there is an internal mailing list for devs, TUs, forum admins & mods, wiki admins, IRC ops and anyone else associated in some semi-official capacity with Arch, please let me know. Otherwise please considering creating such a list. The inner workings of the devs remains a black box for most of us outside the inner circle and it is not always clear how best to pass along information and follow internal issues.

I think what you did here was fine, given that it was already out in the open on the forums. We don't have a lot of secret stuff going on in the development circle, so it is always a bit hard to figure out the proper venue to raise these type of concerns. We could easily set up something like trademark-violations@archlinux.org to send along to the appropriate parties, but that only fixes this particular situation and not anything else that falls into the behind closed doors category. -Dan
