Usually we try to use -fPIC only for the corresponding lib not for the whole build. Is there no way only to build the static lib with -fPIC on x86_64? Look out for a Makefile patch or sed hack. -Andy

The only excessive -fPIC here may be libhistory.a. The both shared libs are built by default with -fPIC anyway. I judged this not worth the concern... Allan
