[arch-dev-public] Dropping freeorion from [community]
Hi, Freeorion is extremely troublesome to maintain. There are no releases of source tarballs for Linux, it takes ages to compile, it fails if it's built by using more than one thread (needs make -j1), it needs patching, the "make install" procedure does not work, there are (or has been) missing includes, it has no .desktop file, it needs special cmake flags in order to use the correct version of python, special cmake flags for C++, modifications to the ogre configuration, a custom script in order to launch correctly, huge amounts of memory to compile and it comes with it's own fork of gigi, a GUI library for C++, which it does not compile without. Upstream is somewhat cooperative, but needs convincing before looking at any problem and doesn't seem to care for Linux. Several TUs have previously maintained it, but orphaned it in frustration. It also takes up a lot of space in the repository. When asking if someone would be interested in maintaining it in, the immediate response from three others was "orhpan it". Hence, I'll move it to AUR. -- Best regards, Alexander Rødseth xyproto / TU
