[arch-dev-public] Enable KMS by default for radeon and intel?
HI guys, Shall i enable kms switch on per default on next .31 rebuild? Radeon will not work without this switch. Intel seems stable? Jan or anyone else any input on this? thanks greetings tpowa -- Tobias Powalowski Archlinux Developer & Package Maintainer (tpowa) http://www.archlinux.org tpowa@archlinux.org

I am using a i915 Intel and the only problem is that warning during boot. anyway it's harmless and all works very well with KMS here.

KMS working fine for me on .31 -- unless that's the cause of http://xkcd.com/619/

Does XV work now? With previous kernel it was disabled when using kms. -- Pierre Schmitz, http://users.archlinux.de/~pierre

put "modeset=0" to the grub kernel append line and it's like having no kms at all. that should fix any remaining issues. If running kms fails on a system it happens in early state when filesystems are not yet mounted. So there should be no risk to enable kms by default. It's simply the future. Fedora has kms enabled for intel, radeon and even nouveau in their rawhide devel tree kernel. We should probably do the same for Intel and Radeon. At least for Radeon it's a must. Radeon requires kms enabled by default. kms can not be enabled via append line switch because a module is missing and is not built at all when not setting kms the default. There's also a pending xf86-video-ati update pending we will need to get kms + 3D. For nouveau: kms is currently completely unusable in our distribution. You need 5-10 times boot attemps to get it up and running. Without kms it's working quiet well again. kms can be enabled with modeset=1 if wanted. We are in contact with upstream devs. See also http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23847 Also Intel seems to work very well in all my systems. I'd vote for enabling kms on Intel and Radeon systems now as the default one. Nouveau is not yet ready. Maybe we should put a news on our page when this will happen. -Andy

It was different for me; Console works fine but the X startup freezes the system and I had to reset it hard. Anyway, the new kernel does not work that great on my NB, so I'll keep my self compiled pacakge. -- Pierre Schmitz, http://users.archlinux.de/~pierre

What? Why will radeon not work without this switch? I have no idea where you came to that conclusion, as I booted and was in X just fine for at least a little bit (until I got a NPE, stack trace in the signoff thread). -Dan

Andy doens't get the modeswitch=1 option if not enabled, imho this is a bug in the kernel. He only get kms with this option set on. I don't know if we should enable it by default, i only have nvidia graphic cards and don't suffer from this at all. We can also wait until next major release. greetings tpowa -- Tobias Powalowski Archlinux Developer & Package Maintainer (tpowa) http://www.archlinux.org tpowa@archlinux.org
