What was the encoding on /etc/passwd? I would say flip-flop it to whatever it wasn't (e.g. ASCII vs. UTF-8). -Dan

Basically, everything should be done in UTF8 nowadays. However, it also has to be ensured that you have UTF8 enabled when reading the commit message and that whatever sends the mails specifies UTF8 as charset in the header. BTW, I'd like to have the ä in my last name in my passwd entry please :)

Done. Commit something and lets see if we break it. It could also be the svnlog script... It says something in the comments about UTF-8. I'm going to add some arguments to force the sending charset to utf-8 Thomas, would you mind committing something to test?

My name thus appears be correctly encoded as UTF8 in /etc/passwd but gmail or your browser somehow reads it as Latin-1.

It reminds me of the (prehistoric) days when I got my very first email account at university, ca 1992. In those days email servers would strip off the 8th bit of messages written with an 8bit-encoding, so something in French like "André va à l'école" would come off as "Andri va ` l'icole".

I have a feeling this may be svnlog being lame. I added a header to force it to utf-8 text, so we'll see if that works out. I just need either you or thomas to commit something 8)

My mailserver does 8bit munging, so his name shows up as FranXXois. Headers, and thus the from address, should always be 7bit encoded. There's some RFC around that describes using Base64 with some encoding to get UTF8 in 7bit headers.

Alright, had to patch svnlog, but I believe this is fixed. Now we grab the passwd entry, decode it as utf8, then encode it in MIME QuotedPrintable format as =?UTF-8?Q?<encoded name>?= I think it works, I will send a sample commit now (note my encoded A's in my name)
