[arch-dev-public] Mirrors supporting rsync
Below is a list of our current mirrors that support rsync. I would like to begin the process of setting up Tiered mirroring to give gerolde some breathing room. To do this, I would like to know the following things: * Which of these mirrors are unreliable? * How many mirrors do we want at the first tier? * What criteria should we use to decide which mirrors are capable of being a tier 1 mirror? * What is the rsync speed for these mirrors? (How much bandwidth do they have to offer?) If anyone has the time to research this, please do so and respond.

Are you sure this list is complete? E.g. hosteurope.de is not on that list and I am just snycing to them. Maybe Gerhard could tell us more. -- Pierre Schmitz, http://users.archlinux.de/~pierre

This is the info our DB holds. Some of them may support rsync based on poking and prodding around, but the entries in the DB don't have that info

This is hard to tell. Maybe we should have a fallback for tier 1 mirrors otherwise if one of them goes down lots of others wont be able to sync anymore. We also should choose the tier 1 mirrors by location; so it does not make sense to have all of them in the US for example. -- Pierre Schmitz, http://users.archlinux.de/~pierre

Only rit.edu sometimes have a out-of-sync, but the reason is most times not finished sync to rsync.al.org...
* How many mirrors do we want at the first tier?
My suggestion is 2 per country if the count of mirrors in this country is for ex. bigger than 4. Otherwise one per country.
* What criteria should we use to decide which mirrors are capable of being a tier 1 mirror?
My suggestion: public rsync access, a minimum of 4 times sync to archlinux per day(often is better), university and well know hosters are privileged above "private mirrors".
* What is the rsync speed for these mirrors? (How much bandwidth do they have to offer?)

I have additionally (my list of rsync mirrors is not complete): ftp.yz.yamagata-u.ac.jp (FS#14627) ftp.rnl.ist.utl.pt )FS#15670) I could try to check until weekend all mirrors if their rsync access works... Gerhard

I have now tried 3 mails with a list of rsync mirror URLs, seems all were filtered by spam filters on the way.... ;-) Here is the list. I worked with an fresh downloaded mirrorlist from http://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/i686/all/ to see if they have rsyncd running and if i could access the archlinux module. To some admins we should sent a mail to repair or create a archlinux module (Marked them with "Mail?") List could be downloaded from here: http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/tmp/mirrors_with_rsync.lst Gerhard

Given that there's not many AU mirrors, would you still want a Tier 1 for australia? If so, I can vouch for all four of the above, I would trust them all. iinet is the third largest ISP here, internode is the 4th. iinet, pacific and aarnet are all on the debian ftp.au.debian.org round robin, so those three are trusted by debian. Internode is a phenomenal ISP. Real humans answer the phones, they provide a brilliant service and have good value plans. They state that they will support anything that has a TCP/IP stack and they mean it. iinet is similarly awesome. They're presently being sued for allowing bittorrent traffic of copyrighted material. They're sticking up for our consumer rights rather than caving and settling with the media companies. So that's anything but conclusive. Maybe send an email to all 4 at once and see if any volunteer. Or just leave as-is as there's not many AU mirrors anyway. James

I guess the New Caledonia mirror would probably sync from an Australian Tier 1 mirror too. Note that I sync my local mirror from pacific.net.au and frequently run into issues of too many rsync connections. Allan

Must be nice to have a choice of ISPs and some of them are good ones. Here, we can choose between a dung heap and a manure pile and they both stink. I remember a children's book that ended every third page with "I think I'll move to Australia." I might have to reread it. ;-) Dusty
