[arch-dev-public] First list of removal candidates
Hi, As promised, here is a first list of removal candidates. Please go through it to make sure we don't remove a package that, for some reason, should remain in extra. Some of the reason are actually questions (cvsup, gnome-system-tools, ksymoops, makedev, nail, rxvt_ja, rxvt) so it would be nice if someone can answer them. As said before, some of these packages are depends of community packages. Please just dicuss them for now. I would prefer to do the actual removal myself. Please don't remove aumix. It's nice to be able to use it in quick scripts, like "aumix -v+3" increases volume by 3 percent on the master volume control. alsamixer does duplicate the ncurses volume adjustment, but doesn't let you adjust the volume unless you do it interactively. // jeff -- .: [ + carpe diem totus tuus + ] :.

Paul has adopted it. So I removed it from the list. What about the other tape drive tool (mtx)? Do we keep it also?

ksymoops Does it still work? It's a 2 yrs old kernel util. From the version number, it seems that it was for kernel 2.4
I think this still works - the oops format just hasn't changed so it hasn't needed updated. I can't prove it works as I haven't had an oops that hasn't completely broken a box in years (probably a good thing). I'll take this if no one else wants it. Dale

I know that in the 2.4 version, one was required to run the oops through ksymoops in order to submit a bug report. That has changed, the oops is reported as-is. What other use for ksymoops is there?

These lists are based on the packages that were orphaned about 2 weeks ago. It's possible that some packages have been adopted meanwhile. If you see packages on these list which has a maintainer, remove it from the list. Same procedure if you decide to adopt one of these packages. PS: I removed beagle from the list. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Either remove from unstable and maintain in community, or update in extra and use the AUR version. As the current AUR maintainer is one of the community guys, this would be best in community, unless someone else takes over maintainership and communicates with the original author (it's perl, it's tricky and I won't help :P)

Don't know if it's the same project, but where libpixman moved its internals into cairo and became obsolete, pixman was moved outside the internals of xorg-server to make it more standalone.

This week-end cleanup will only be of package on the sublist that I submitted to inspection/discussion on this ML. The other packages on the global wiki list (like the packages Damir discussed) will be considered for possible removal in the next week or so. The above keepers are packages that were on the sublist and for which a dev showed interest in adopting or keeping. Before removing anything, I'll check if someone has adopted it since I made the list of orphans. Therefore, any package that has a maintainer is automatically a keeper. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Great, thanks a lot. I should (hopefully) be available for most of the weekend to help you out if you need it.

The packages in that first sublist have been removed from extra or unstable. Thanks goes to Damir who has helped me out to add some of the packages in AUR (unsupported). I'll send a second sublist for discussion/revision in the upcoming days.
