[arch-dev-public] Mplayer: switching to svn
Hi guys, I was thinking in use the svn version of mplayer. The latest stable release is marked as outdated and has several security problems. Also, the official project recommends using svn version [1]. It is generally stable and works well. There is a problem with that? Should i change the name of the package for mplayer-svn or can I keep "mplayer"? [1] http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html -- Hugo

Nice to hear that; I hope this will eleminate all problems with smplayer ;-) Just keep it as mplayer. Good practice is to use svn export, generate a tar ball of the source and upload it into ftp/other/mplayer. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

Agreed. Keep it at "mplayer". Please make sure to put the tarballs in ftp/other, as this covers us in terms of GPL compliance and makes it easier for users to rebuild the same package via abs.

I looked at your arch-sheriff page the other day and thought a good half of the bugs dealt with mplayer, so this is a welcome move. -Dan

Yeah, let's do this. You have my approval, I know that was what you were waiting for, Hugo. ;-)

smplayer stopped working now. :-) Maybe it needs to be rebuild. It also complains about an incorrect version of mplayer. It seems it does not contain the svn revision: "MPlayer dev-SVN-rUNKNOWN-4.3.2" -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

smplayer asked me what version of mplayer I was using. I selected greater than 1.0rc2 and all worked fine from then on. Rebuilding smplayer does not help. Allan

Worked fine here as well, smplayer just asked which version I was using, so I just put greater than 1.0rc2. But it worked like a charm.

Not for me. I also tried to remove .mplayer and .smplayer. mplayer (x86_64) quits with "Error parsing option on the command line: -ass". -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de

Maybe this is x86_64 specific because Eduardo and I run i686. Can you open a bug report about this and even try a rebuild of smplayer. I won't have access to x86_64 until the weekend. Allan

The new version of mplayer calls you names if you screw up?! Can we get this in pacman? :: Error connection to archlinux.org, ass

OMG, this is epic, is going to be history, the funniest error output I have read yet.
Yep. This is x86_64 specific and seems to be a fakeroot bug. One solution is create the package as root, but its better try to fix fakeroot. -- Hugo

This looks like http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/12653 which I find no solution to. The next makepkg/pacman version will allow you to separate the build and package steps and only run the package stage will be run in fakeroot. Allan
