[arch-dev-public] xorg group restructuring
I'd like to propose a restructuring of Xorg packages. Right now we have xorg-server, some drivers in two groups, some apps, and some transition packages. Some belong to a group, some don't. I would like to propose these groups: - xorg-apps: containing only the app/* packages from upstream - xorg-drivers: containing all driver/* packages from upstream - xorg-fonts: containing all font/* packages from upstream - xorg: includes all of the above, xorg-server and several other packages missing from the other groups For the average user, the way to do a minimal installation of X will remain xorg-server and their video driver and possibly xf86-input-synaptics. They might want xorg-xinit for startx, but upstream decided to deprecate that. I don't know how we will handle that, but the package stays available. I don't see reasons to create a base group for a minimal X installation as xorg-server depends on all the things it needs, except for a video driver. The xorg-video-drivers and xorg-input-drivers will be removed, as I see no reason to install all video drivers but not all input drivers or the other way around.

Isn't this what you warned us about back in December? Or am I missing some finer details?

These would be superseded by xorg-drivers?

In december I warned about splitting the combined packages in their standalone versions. This was halfway done and never finished. I hope to finish that transformation with this update too. So far I have all apps from the upstream release set packaged.

Yes. The only reason to use these groups are for live CDs or similar installations. For those setups I see no need to install all input drivers but not all video drivers, or the other way around. It's all or nothing, not half.
