[arch-dev-public] x86_64 machines for Arch devs
Hey guys, I know we all agreed to drop i686 support, but it leaves me with a small problem -- I'm one of the few devs not yet blessed with a 64 bit machine. I was thinking maybe we could use the donation funding to buy x86_64 build boxes for each of us. We've got a lot of donation funding and the income from Schwag would of course help, but we'd probably have to do a donation drive to raise about half the funds. It seems like a good use of the funding to me, and our community is totally awesome, I'm sure it won't be hard to raise it. What do you guys think? In the meantime, I'm going to continue maintaining an i686 repo of my own for a few weeks, but lets face it: this machine is a dinosaur, its time to upgrade! Dusty

Are we looking at doing desktop machines or laptops? Desktops would obviously be cheaper, but that assumes you already have the keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc. -Dan

I had a core2duo running i686 so I just finished my reinstall. Forgot that there is no wine for x86_64 and I don't want a chroot or lib32 setup so I am ending my dependency on MS Office. Though I will probably give in eventually... Which is cleaner, lib32 or chrooting? Allan

You should have raised this earlier, we could have sorted something out by now. I think we still had some donation funds left over, maybe we can use those? In the meantime, I'm sure someone can give you SSH access to a build machine. James

Something like "one x86_64 laptop per Arch dev"? That might work. Maybe we could find a sponsor for supporting our work. -- Pierre Schmitz Clemens-August-Straße 76 53115 Bonn Telefon 0228 9716608 Mobil 0160 95269831 Jabber pierre@jabber.archlinux.de WWW http://www.archlinux.de
