[arch-devops] Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: [Ticket#2019022503014001] miscellaneous request
So what do you guys think about this? I think it's pretty good and we should jump on it. We can't post on Twitter as we don't have access to that. How about instead offering them to put their logo on the site? In case anyone is wondering, the price would be 16.4€ per month. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Katherine Snow <marketing@hetzner.com> Date: Tue, Mar 12, 2019, 21:31 Subject: Re: Fwd: Fwd: [Ticket#2019022503014001] miscellaneous request To: Sven-Hendrik Haase <svenstaro@gmail.com> Cc: Christian Fitz - Hetzner Online GmbH <christian.fitz@hetzner.com> Hi Sven-Hendrik, I apologize for the delayed response. My supervisor and I spoke, and we're able to offer you an AX160-NVMe at a 90% discount for a period of one year. We'll ask you to cover the remaining 10%, and when that year approaches an end, you can re-apply for sponsoring by writing to us again at marketing@hetzner.com If it's possible, we'd appreciate you mentioning us in some way on social media, even if it's just a quick "thank you". I saw that somone from ArchLinux is active here: https://twitter.com/archlinux?lang=en https://www.facebook.com/archlinuxpage/ Would that be a fair trade-off for you? Looking forward to your answer! Hi Katherine,
No worries. Thanks for getting back to me.
For the CI service, the faster the better as far as the server CPU performance is concerned. The DX292 would be optimal for our use case. I realize that it's quite expensive and thus if that server is out of the question, the AX160-NVME would be a good second option for us.
The length of usage would be indefinite. The server itself would be used primarily by roughly 30 developers and an automated CI system. We have a bit more than 10000 packages.
We don't know how many end users the distribution has as we don't have any way to track that but we have a few hundred mirrors by volunteers and assuming every mirror has 1000 users, that puts us at a few 100k users. We're usually in the top 10 list of distributions at distrowatch.org <http://distrowatch.org>.
Thank you for your consideration.
Many regards,
Sven-Hendrik Haase

Hi Sven-Hendrik,
Please accept my sincerest apologies for just now responding to you about this.
Could you please let me know specifically which Hetzner Online product(s) you have in mind for your CI/CD service? Which specific dedicated servers and/or cloud models would you need and for how long? Could you also provide a bit more information about how many projected users you would have?
Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,

Hi, I think "sorry, we don't have access to our own arch linux twitter account" sounds really awkward (especially to marketeers). If I would be the marketeer over 1000 alarm bells would ring in my head, when I hear that distribution/company XY has no access to their own social media. I Suggest we get control over that arch linux twitter account and maybe over the facebook page as well. We could argue with copyright violations, because of our Arch Linux trademark. However, I like the idea to put the hetzner logo on our website. You could argue with mentions on reddit (~80k subscribers) and a good fanbase as well. Furthermore most of our Staff has personal twitter accounts. For me it would be no problem to retweet the official arch linux one or just mention it by my self :) Thanks for your work. "We are not active on social media." — end of story and no alarm bells! They should be fine with a logo on the main website, as it's done for other sponsors too. Paying only 10% for an AX160-NVME sounds like a steal. We can then cancel soyuz after quassel/matrix/phrik have been moved to VMs.

Trademark issues with twitter aren't as easy as you expect.. Anyhow we got the contact information of the @archlinux account holder who hopefully will hand it over. As for the server, +1 from me :-) -- Jelle van der Waa

We aren't a company and we aren't even a foundation. You're being optimistic if you think we haven't tried trademark violation route yet…
(Also who uses Facebook these days :P) Donators like PIA are mentioned here[1] and on front page, I think we should do the same for Hetzner. Good job Sven! BP
