Hi, I need help to build parrot for x86_64. /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/libreadline.a(readline.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against `rl_get_previous_history' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC /usr/lib/libreadline.a: could not read symbols: Bad value Does it ask to recompile readline.o with -fPIC?

Hello, This is a list [#1] of possible packages that can be arch=('any') in a future. The pkgs don't have any ELF[*] (x86-32 or x86-64) [executables, shared objects, relocatables] or AR archives (static libs). First, I am not a big fan of the idea of package modifying a core file. Secondly what will happen when a user reinstalls the initscripts? If my memory holds me correctly the sed command will fail which will cause the post_install() to fail, because the file already has the correct modifications. This will also happen with users who switch between the official initscripts and unofficial initscripts (faster boot, bootsplash, etc...). I would suggest including a post_install() message and posting a news item a couple days before the move, instead. This way users can find out about this change via the news or via pacman's output. Finally this might be a good "reality" check for users who just install packages and don't pay attention to pacman's output or the news. ~pyther

[arch-general] Latest testing/vim lacks symlink

Hi, just upgraded to testing/vim 7.2-234 today and found that the color schemes are missing. After simple investigation, it was a problem of lacking a symlink within vim's directory. there should be a /usr/share/vim/vimcurrent => vim72 which is missing from the pack ? if anyone who is having the same problem just make the link, then it should work.

[arch-general] latest updates broke kde3, kde4, twm & console login ability

Listmates, Here is a rather strange one. On a dell gx280 box (Intel graphics) that had been running both kdemod3 and kde4.3 beta 2 just brilliantly, I am now left without any way to log in from the console. All was great until updates earlier today. What happens is -- the box boot fine and will bring up the kdm login/chooser display just fine. If kdm (from testing) is being used, then after supplying your user/pass all appears like it is going to start as usual. The Air theme is presented and the first little icon (I think it is a hard drive) fades in like usual. Then all of a sudden <BOOM> &%$ {BAM} !#$ <CRASH!!>, the screen goes black flickers slightly and then kdm restarts. (you could do this over-and-over all night) The weird thing is that you CANNOT even choose "console login" to drop to text mode. Pretty much the same sequence plays out here to. After supplying your user/pass all appears like it is going to drop you to the text console, then the screen goes black and kdm restarts and you are left right back where you started -- Huh?? Another bit of weirdness. When I edit my gurb config to tell it to just start in runlevel3 be adding a "3" at the end of the boot like, the boot process seems to ignore this. You see the "Entering Runlevel 3" line go by during boot, but then <WHACK> kdm starts and you are back at the beginning of the loop staring at the kdm greeter knowing this trick isn't going to work (Kinda reminds me of Groundhod Day -- the movie -- you remember) So I have tried a pacman -Syu and loaded another 30 meg of packages, but none looking like they would solve the problem (and they didn't) Now I'm kinda at a loss What gives? What to check? But, how do I recover? (I still have full ssh access to the box, so fixing it won't be a problem once I can figure out what I'm looking for and how to fix it. [arch-general] Firefox on Arch - crash on exit

Hello listmates, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what's going on with Firefox. While running arch (not ubuntu 9.04/fedora 11 which I also have installed on the same laptop), I run into the following scenario nearly every time I attempt to launch Firefox. "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." Sure enough, I'm not being lied to: $ ps -ef | grep firefox tgelter 10871 4318 2 22:30 ? 00:00:02 /usr/bin/firefox $ killall firefox && firefox and I'm in business. The thing is, it doesn't matter how I shut down Firefox (click the X, file->quit, ctrl+w closing each tab until the last takes down Firefox), I always end up in the same situation. I went to #archlinux on freenode to talk about the issue a while back (this issue has been plaguing me for weeks) and was told to try disabling extensions/themes, creating a new profile and using that, "pacman -Rsn firefox && pacman -Sy firefox"ing, I even got so fed up that I did a fresh install on a new partition and tried again. Nothing has worked, at all. Following is my info, I really doubt I'm the first person to run into this so please, can anyone help? arch x86_64 on a Lenovo T61 laptop (nvidia video card w/ proprietary driver) x86_64 version of Firefox, x86_64 versions of jre/flash installed (this is a must) I run a kde 4.2.4 desktop installed from kdemod. $ pacman -Sl | awk '{print $1}' | sort | uniq -c 1900 community 175 core 1983 extra 390 kdemod-core 82 kdemod-extragear 62 kdemod-playground As you can see above, I don't have any testing/unstable packages installed though there are some from extra & kdemod-playground. If you need any other info, let me know. Remember this problem only happens under arch, I have the same usage patterns and package selections under Fedora/Ubuntu as far as I know.

[arch-general] reconfiguring vi to work like it did before the last update?

Listmates, One are where I can use help is vi configuration. With the latest updates to vi and I guess readline, vi behaves very differently than it did just before the update. Specifically, the screen flashes white/black when the cursor is in column 1 if a left cursor is pressed or if vi toggles itself out of input mode. How can I get rid of the flashing and get rid of vi taking itself out of input/replace mode when it gets to column 1? The current behavior is better than when I first tried it several weeks ago, but it is still way different from any vi I have used before. Anybody got a handy reference for handling vi changes in the latest version? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Please signoff both architectures. The new version fixes CVE-2009-0692 (https://www.isc.org/node/468). I have cleaned up the PKGBUILD and removes our patches. So please test it carefully and report any issue to the bugtracker or the ML. On works here on my PC, but it needs definitely more testing. Daniel
