Hello All, I recently put a new SATA drive in my computer and decided to start with a fresh install of Arch. Before this upgrade, suspend to RAM worked fine (although I don't know if it was with kernel or uswsusp). (I should say, I'm not sure if the SATA upgrade is a cause of my problem or simply a coincidence) Although I copied my /etc/suspend.conf and /etc/pm from the old drive I must be missing something because it's not working anymore (nothing else apart from the hard drive has changed). When I do pm-suspend, the computer correctly powers down and the power LED goes from green to orange... when I wake up the computer however, instead of resuming, it reboots. So far, I've tried the following: echo mem > /sys/power/state: suspends, reboots instead of resuming pm-suspend --auto-quirks: suspends, reboots instead of resuming s2ram -n: tells me the system is unknown s2ram -f: suspends but reboots instead of resuming s2ram -f -a 3 and other variations: same, reboots instead of resuming The pm-suspend.log file is not very helpful -- it shows that the computer correctly suspends, but the last entry is "performing suspend" and there's no information on resume of course because the computer restarts instead of resuming. To rule out modules, I tested a minimal setup explained in the SUSE doc: * edit the grub kernel command to start only bash: init=/bin/bash * mount /sys and /proc by hand: mount /sys && mount /proc * manually suspend to RAM: echo mem > /sys/power/state Again, the power LED goes orange, but when I wake up the computer it restarts. I've tried different BIOS settings in case I had accidentally changed something there, but it made no difference. It seems the resume hook isn't working -- even though I re-mkinitcpio'ed the kernel images with the resume hook (also tried the uresume hook -- I'm a bit confused about this, though I think uresume is for uswsusp and resume for kernel suspend). Is there a way of seeing what happens when the wake-up event occurs? I tried adding a hook in /etc/pm/sleep.d for the resume event, but of course it's not reached, so I get nothing out. Any suggestions on how to debug this issue further would be much appreciated. I've been staring at the problem so long that I might have missed something obvious... Listmates, One shortcoming that really irks me (and a whole lot of other laptop users) is the lack of an ATI driver for the meager hardware on most laptops. I don't know what the statistics are, but just from an educated guess standpoint, I bet that 50-65% of the current (in use and less than 3 years old) graphic adapters in laptops is ATI. (either Xpress or mobility Radeon chips). The difference in performace between using the radeonhd driver and the fglrx driver is 6-fold, only made that much worse by kde4 demands on the graphic subsystem. I don't know if there is any political/developer will for this, but for a majority of the ati laptop hardware out there (and desktop for that matter), we have the fglrx driver that is now static as of the 9-3 (version 8.953) release of the "legacy" driver with ATI abandoning driver support for all pre 2400 series cards. In the past, the main reason for not supporting the ATI driver (not just Arch) was that it was too much of a moving target, requiring considerable work on the distros part to keep up with library changes, etc. Now with the driver static, I wonder if it might not be worth looking into to see if it is even feasable to try and make it work with the current arch setup. ( I know I'm not smart enough in this area to be of any use. ) The reason I bring this up I running arch on one drive I have for my laptop, and I'm limited to the radeonhd driver. It's getting better, but it has two achiles heels: (1) performance, and (2) heat (lots of it). Ultimately, the radeonhd driver will crack the black box and have a great driver, but currently, the combination of the issues is bad enough, I keep an old copy of suse 11 on another driver for use in my laptop, for no other reason than it has the working fglrx driver and I can work with my laptop without the fan noise and heat under my left palm caused by the lack of downclocking/powerdown of the unused gpu circuitry experienced with the radeonhd driver. I don't know if it is even worth looking into, but I do know that for laptop users, if Arch had a working fglrx driver, that would be one key point a lot of laptop users would be willing to switch for. Just a stray thought, so take it for what its worth. As for the current, still maintained, ATI driver for 2400+ series cards, good luck, it's still moving pretty fast.... -- David C. Listmates, One of my friends from the openSuSE list was trying his first archilinux install and ran into an issue. IWell, my first attempt at installing Arch Linux did not go well. The net install went OK but when it came to the, I guess, configuration of the system, things went bum-up: the network configuration files could not be read and therefore could not be written, or something along these lines. don't know if this will explain the problem fully, but if this describes a common problem with the latest network install cd's, then if somebody could point me in the right direction, I'll pass the answer along. Hello, after my latest update of my vServer, I wanted to ssh into this box. But I'm given this error message and the ssh hangs: $ ssh bitterblume.com PTY allocation request failed on channel 0 Is there any chance to resque that? I've always did a copy of the old kernel-image. [arch-general] Problems with most recent gstreamer updates

Hey everybody, I was wondering whether anybody else had trouble since the update to extra/gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins 0.10.14-1 and extra/gstreamer0.10-good-plugins 0.10.16-1 using applications that make use of gstreamer. A couple of people including me seem to have issues with it that cause all gstreamer applications to fail. I'm bringing this up on the mailing list because I can't seem to find the root cause of the problem by myself and because gstreamer is a critical part of any Gnome setup (gnome-settings-daemon fails without it, for example). The problem on running gstreamer applications is this: Error re-scanning registry , child terminated by signal Even gnome-settings-daemon in debug mode has little more relevant info than this error message. Since gstreamer itself probably doesn't provide detail logs of what went wrong, I'm having trouble finding the cause. The gstreamer bug tracker doesn't have a bug filed on this so I don't know whether this is an Arch problem or an upstream problem.
