Listmates, I stumbled across some absolutely killer gtk-2.0 & metacity themes that caught my eye. If you use gnome, Xfce, etc.., give them a try and I guarantee you, you will be blown away. They are available at gnome-look or Xfce-look.org sites or by googling the theme name. Most also come with an emerald theme as well as part of the package. Hi, I have openoffice installed as well as lprng. Lprng used to work for openoffice providing I believe "Generic Printer" or similar. Some time back for it work under any gtk-2 application (like firefox) I had to add to the gtkrc: gtk-print-backends = "file,lpr,cups" This is still working for firefox and other gtk-2 applications, however it doen't help at all to openoffice. I launched spadmin to see if I could actually add a printer manually. But it doens't work, the most that can be done is trying to install a driver. So no luck... Has any one made lprng work properly with openoffice? Thanks, -- Javier.

Guys, I have a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter. Now I am trying to be able to connect to a Cisco switch via console serial cable using the Minicom utility. My problem is I don't know how to tell Minicom that my serial device is connected to /dev/ttyUSB0 or maybe it already knows & I just don't know how to use it... Code: [carlos@tuna ~]$ dmesg | grep tty console [tty0] enabled 00:06: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 5) is a 16550A usb 5-2: Keyspan 1 port adapter converter now attached to ttyUSB0 Does anyone know how I can tell my Arch system that I have a USB to serial adapter connected to my machine?

I'm no longer a kde fan, I used to be until almost everything they changed for kde4 ticked me off... Over all I'm just as glad they did because otherwise I wouldn't have discovered E17 (or XFCE) which are currently my two main desktop environments. However, kde has some apps that I'm still addicted to: One of them is the old kde3x version of kaffiene for playing my music files. I never really embraced most of it's advanced features, and frankly I dislike using playlist files. What attracted me to kaffeine was when I discovered that with the kde3x version I could use the keyboard to do an: File->Open URL->PathToMusicDirTree Where PathToMusicDirTree is the top most directory of a multi directory structure that contains only music files and directories to more music files. And kaffeine would open not only any music files within "PathToMusicDirTree" but recursively any music files in any of it's subdirectories. I could add and delete files to and from this directory tree and know that the next "File->Open URL->PathToMusicDirTree" would result in kaffeine playing all of them. At most all I needed to do was to set shuffle and repeat options to enjoy my background music for as long as I wanted it. That is all I ever wanted of a music player... Since kde4 I've learned that I really need to build a playlist by repetitively using "File->Open URL-> NonRecursiveDir" until I've added each and every subdir of "PathToMusicDirTree" one at a time. Worse, I need to rebuild the playlist file every time I want to add or remove music from my files... But every time I've tried an alternative it either insists on making me work with playlists, or only wants me to control it via the {many expletives deleted}rodent pointing device. or both. Worse still with the version I added to my Arch install (extra/kaffeine 1.0pre3-1) the command "Playlist ->Save As" doesn't work. So I have to work with playlists I create from one of my other distros. Another odd thing about this version of kaffeine is that "File ->Play Audio CD" only likes to play the first track... Could somebody recommend another media player I could try that will let me create temporary music lists on the fly by typing the path to a parent dir containing multiple music directories??? One that understands keyboard commands for it's functions??? And hopefully one that doesn't force me to break out a microscope to read any displayed text or labels on some prettified gui representation of some livingroom sound system where I don't even know which knob or button it wants me to click on is supposed to do what??? -- | ~^~ ~^~ | <?> <?> Joe (theWordy) Philbrook | ^ J(tWdy)P | \___/ <<jtwdyp(a)ttlc.net>>

[arch-general] Boot iso with grub2

There has been a request for a findiso boot option so you can boot the iso with grub2 on a usb stick. I have this feature in my archiso-live and it works very well. Here is some code i have for it: _mnt_iso() { img="${1}" #mnt="${2}" mnt="/tmpfs/mnt/findiso" msg "::: Mounting ${img} to ${mnt}" mkdir -p "${mnt}" mount -r -t iso9660 "${img}" "${mnt}" } I remade my archiso hook to look more like the official one yesterday. I also added a _mnt_move function so you can move mounts instead of just bind them. Here is code for that: _mnt_move() { src="${1}" mnt="${2}" msg "::: Moving ${src} to ${mnt}" mkdir -p "${mnt}" /bin/mount -o move "${src}" "${mnt}" } I believe the /bootmnt could use _mnt_move instead of _mnt_bind. I have more features that could be added too. I hope this helps.

[arch-general] Problem mounting shares with latest smbclient-3.5.0-2

I have smbclient-3.5.0-2, and did the suggested chmod +s on /sbin/mount.cifs, and /sbin/umount.cifs. The UID, and GID bits are now set on both, but I still can't mount shares from KDEmod3's smb4k (version 0.9.9). The error message says "/sbin/mount.cifs: permission denied: no match found for /home/djmons/smb4k/GATEWAY/djmons found in /etc/fstab". Now I don't believe I need an entry in /etc/fstab because on my Debian lenny install an entry is created in /etc/mtab when the share is mounted, and removed when unmounted. I can't revert back to my earlier version of smbclient (version 3.3.7-1), as I only recently installed the samba package (samba-3.5.0-2), and have no version to match my earlier version of the smbclient. are earlier package versions still kept somewhere? I do have more than one user set up on this Archlinux install. Would that have anything to do with why the chmod +s isn't doing it's job properly? idiotboy:x:1002: djmons:x:1003: Any suggestions as how to resolve the problem. Nigel.

[arch-general] Getting X running on new install

Hi All, I am using Ubuntu since 2005 and I like it. The only problem is that each 6 month I am spending some time to update. I have for that 2 root partitions available. I heard about Arch Linux and its rolling release and decided to try it out. The base install went fine and I have a running core system. So I decided to tackle the X server which under Ubuntu uses the nvidia proprietary driver. I installed pacman -S nvidia nvidia-config and gave startx from my user account a try. No luck, the message was cannot load module nvidia. Then I used lshw and the card is loisted as G96 [GeForce 9600 GT] both under Ubuntu and Arch Linux. I uninstalled the nvidia and installed pacman -S nvidia-96xx nvidia-config and again no luck. How can I get this card up and running with full hw support as under Ubuntu? Tx/Alain

I am not a beginner and have read quite some articles about Arch and I am aware of the fact that I have to follow carefully all steps in this installation process. So pleas bear with me and hep me over this problem. Since it failed I tried to identify the card (I did not know the lshw command before) and redid the steps with the driver for the nvidia-96xx card. Again no X-screen. I also copied the xorg.conf from Ubuntu over to Arch but again no X server that would run. I also tried the nouveau driver and he is given as error: (EE) [drm] failed to open device (EE) No devices detected. Fatal server error: no screens found It is the second time I try to install Arch, I really want to try out this rolling principle, but again I am unable to get up the X server which is working without flaws in Ubuntu.
