I'm tearing my hair out over this one. I'm trying to export some directories using nfs. I've read the Arch Wiki and even been on the IRC channel but I can't fix this bloody problem. I have a desktop and a laptop both running Arch. The desktop is the server and the laptop the client. I'm using MAC-DHCP address reservation so the desktop has a static ip of 192.168.1.3 and the laptop 192.168.1.4. Here are the relevant configs: SERVER /etc/exports: /home/ananda/ 192.168.1.4(ro,fsid=0,no_subtree_check,async,nohide) /home/ananda/Music 192.168.1.4(ro,no_subtree_check,async,nohide) /etc/hosts.allow: nfsd: 192.168.1.4 rpcbind: 192.168.1.4 mountd: 192.168.1.4 I then start, rpcbind, nfs-common and nfs-server in order on the sever. CLIENT /etc/hosts.allow: rpcbind: 192.168.1.3 I then start rpcbind and nfs-common in that order on the client. There are no firewalls or iptables rules on the desktop and laptop as I'm behind a NAT and I'm lazy. The domain names in /etc/idmapd.conf are identical on both client and server too. When I try the command: mount -t nfs4 192.168.1.3:/home/ananda /mnt/shares I get the error message: mount.nfs4: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.3:/home/ananda The error is the same if I try nfs as the type. I've also run showmount on the client and the server at 192.168.1.3 shows the correct exports. I have no idea what's wrong. I've check and double checked everything. With Arch, it was easier than I expected. (of course I needed help from the list to figure that out ;-) So I'm glad to help. After 1.5 years with Arch and even going through the pacman tar.gz to tar.xz changes, there are probably only 10-20 packages that I have had to manually move manually. (verses over 10,000+ that have passed through /var/cache/pacman/pkg) I do really full installs of Arch with many desktops (kde3, kde4, iceWM, fluxbox, openbox WindowMaker, Gnome, enlightenment e16 and e17) and full openOffice and compilation tools, etc.. and total packages per box run from ~2200 to ~2800 (for full-server installs). A simple way to manage updates between boxes over the LAN w/o having to re-download over the Internet is worth it's weight in gold. Especially at the office where 'business internet bandwidth' cost is ~ 5x the residential cost. (no wonder the US is losing its competitive edge). Anyway, glad I could help with the idea. Put it in your hip pocket for when you have multiple boxes. This simple little setup works like a champ. Also, as a final tip, if you don't currently use 'basket notepads' to keep your Arch/Linux notes squirreled away in. Give it a look. Even if you don't use kde3 or kde4, it's worth loading the runtime and installing basket notepads. (I'm running fluxbox right now and basket works just fine) It's like a flexible second brain for any type of notes/sounds/colors/images/etc.. [arch-general] PostgreSQL 8.4.4-4 in [testing]

I put a new version (8.4.4-4) of Postgres in [testing] tonight that fixes quite a few issues and wanted to just give it a few days to bake before pushing it to extra. Let me know if you see any issues with the new package. * FS#20556 - [postgresql] should be compiled with more options and libs, for a features reach package * FS#16507 - [postgresql] $PG_ROOT created with incorrect permissions * FS#19687 - [postgresql] no logrotate config * FS#18756 - [postgresql] package doesn't have contribs except adminpack -Dan P.S. If you tried 8.4.4-3, ignore the fact that it ever existed...yes there were conflicting files in the two packages.

Hi all, Subject line says it all, really -- installed gvim, and on opening it, I get a blank, empty, grey window: http://i.imgur.com/DUUIO.png . Reinstalling gvim & vim-runtime has no effect. I would try aur/vim-gtk instead of extra/gvim, but it seems to be unbuildable -- one of the sources gives a 404. If relevant, Arch is up to date, and is broadly KDE4.5 (with compiz and bmpanel2 used in place of kwin and plasma). Since I haven't heard anyone else have this problem with gvim, I assume it's just me. Anyone had anything liike this before? Any ideas? Thanks to all in advance. Simon Woolf

Hi, I'm unable to use multiple keyboard layouts due to the error mentioned in the subject. What's the solution? [arch-general] Unable to Start PostgreSQL

When I installed the latest version of PostgreSQL today, I attempted to start the daemon so I could login and start creating databases but received the following error: [root@buster ~]# /etc/rc.d/postgresql start :: Starting PostgreSQL [BUSY] su: warning: cannot change directory to /var/lib/postgres: Permission denied could not change directory to "/root" pg_ctl: could not open PID file "/var/lib/postgres/data/postmaster.pid": Permission denied [FAIL] Anyone know what I am doing wrong? This is a brand new server and fresh install of both Arch & PostgreSQL.
