[arch-general] Question about automated builder

I have mentioned this subject before on aur-general, but I wanted to open a discussion about it in the broader community. I have spent a great deal of my career working with Red Hat Linux, as have many in the professional Linux world, and there is one project that is amazingly useful for the Red Hat world, and that is Koji. You can take a look at the web interface for koji here: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/ Basically, koji acts as a continuous build server for the fedora project's rpms. it has a number of benefits, one is that all of the building is done in a controlled environment, so we have a %100 assurance that the packages makedepends are correct, and and the packages are all built inside of clean chroots. Koji also allows for very simple mass-rebuilds of packages, since all anyone needs to do it increment the release number and koji can pick up the change and build the package. I have been passively working on a similar project called quarters, but I must admit that my motivation is somewhat low not knowing if the project is in demand. So here is my question, do we think that something like this would be a benefit to Arch? Is this the type of project that should merit my attention? Also, if we do think that this would be a good thing to have for Arch, I would like feedback on what types of features the system would have and how it would behave. Right now I am following the idea of supporting a distributed build system so that we can have any number of build servers in the fray working away to produce Arch packages for us. I am also attempting to build it in such a way that a database is not required and that the interface would be amazingly simple (this is Arch after all). This would mean that by mearly checking into svn a package would be built, and then an interface would pop up for the right people to sign it off, and once it has been signed off it would move over. Or at least that is the basic idea I am running on. The code has not come very far, but if the Arch community and developers think that this is a good idea then please let me know, my motivation should soar and I will make Arch a super continuous package build system! -Thomas S Hatch -TU

Hello Community, Over the last few weeks I have been working on Syslinux support for the installer. With the help Thomas and Dieter I am nearing the completion of this project. As part of this project, I have written a script that will help install and update Syslinux (similar to that of grub-install). Some key features of the script: syslinux-install_update.sh * Install Syslinux to the FS + Partition Boot Loader (extlinux --install /boot/syslinux) * Install Syslinux MBR * Detect and optionally set the boot flag on the boot partition * Update Syslinux – copy files and execute (extilnux --update /boot/syslinux) * Support for GPT disks * Support for RAID configurations The goal is to include this script in the official Syslinux package. Therefore we need your help to test it. syslinux-install_update.sh -i -a -m ..... install Syslinux, set the boot flag (if needed), and install the MBR We need tests for the following setups: / + /boot on the *same* partition / + /boot on the *same* partition - RAID /boot + root on *separate* partition /boot + root on *separate* partition - RAID All of the above using but using the GPT partition layout NOTE: This is an alpha/beta stage script. The script modifies the first 440 bytes of the disk (using dd) and the partition table (using either sfdisk or sgdisk). Although the script should be safe to run, I am not responsible for any data loss that may occur. Let us know the following: * Did the script work for you? * What was your partition setup? [arch-general] PKGBUILD - howto handle 'src' when svn source is already in PKGBUILD dir?

Guys, I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a set of PKGBUILDs for the Trinity svn tree. I already have the svn source on my computer. I can check for the latest version or svn up each module and I can have makepkg 'redownload' the latest rev in $startdir/src, but HOW do I setup the PKGBUILD to just use what is already in the svn tree? Example: arts I have the following in the dependencies/arts directory: .svn admin artsc cmake doc examples flow gmcop libltdl mcop mcop_mt mcopidl qtmcop soundserver tests x11 CMakeLists.txt COPYING COPYING.LIB INSTALL Makefile.am.in Makefile.cvs arts.lsm arts.pc.cmake config.h.cmake configure.in.bot configure.in.in Since I already have the source, I don't want to create a new $startdir/src/arts under the dependencies/arts directory by simply calling makepkg in that directory. (unless there is some out-of-source trick using links or the like) I'd like to find a way to just do a PKGBUILD to use the source in the current directory and then create the pkg directory in another location. Is there a standard way of handling PKGBUILDs for each module in a large tree that can do this? It's almost like I want to use --noextract while creating a link from src -> ./, but that just seems screwy. Anybody got a trick for doing this? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] wiki page for Building Trinity on Arch - You want it here or on the trinity site?

Guys, As I work through building the pkgbuilds for Trinity on Arch, I have been keeping notes, etc. on what has to take place. I will put that information up on a wiki. My question to the Arch devs is "do you want it here on the Arch wiki, or do you want it over on the Trinity wiki?" It doesn't matter to me. It makes more sense to have it here, but there has been so much rancor over 'kde3 is dead' that I don't want to go to the effort here if somebody is just going to nix it. For the interested, Trinity is no longer kde3. It is currently actively developed, and is moving to cmake and qt4. There are current builds for Debian, Ubuntu and Slackware being maintained. My goal is to create a set of pkgbuilds for Arch (which will obviously take a bit of time). But if I can get them working from the svn tree, it should be a great resource for Arch. So what say the powers that be? Do the wiki page here or at Trinity? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Frequency of abs updates, would increasing frequency cost much?

This is more a general question, I understand abs is updated every 24 hours. Would more regular updates (say, every 1 hour or so) be better? Currently, for those (like me) who compulsively update, abs is pretty much guaranteed to be behind the latest packages in any mirror (by a max of 24 hours). If it doesn't cost (resources etc.) too much for abs to be updated every 1 hour, wouldn't this mean that most mirrors are likely to be in sync with abs just about all the time? Obviously I've got self-interest in this, since I auto-patch (using bauerbill) some packages from the repos. Its not a huge priority (I can manually access the SVN interface, but I think it'd be useful.

[arch-general] [pam/consolekit] Help needed for desktop permission handling

While packaging Xfce 4.7 I had to find a way to allow the desktop user to shutdown/reboot(consolekit), hibernate/suspend(upower),mounte removable devices(udisks). Recent display managers (gdm, kdm and lxdm) can handle their own polkit/consolekit session through pam access. The gnome/xfce4-session packages only have basic access to consolekit and since the consolekit 0.4.2 in testing they can't deal with it anymore. As a workaround I have plans to ship files in xfce4-session as proto files where the admin can add users or groups to allow certain actions: /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.upower.pkla and /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/org.freedesktop.consolekit.pkla and maybe one for udisk something like https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=42669 . This could also be done each in the consolekit/upower/udisks packages. But all this is crap working around some nasty bugs in our pam pkg not allowing direct access to consolekit. Please have a look at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17188 https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/21391 Pam has an update pending (also fixing security related issues) and quiet a lot open bugs: https://bugs.archlinux.org/index.php?string=pam&project=1&search_name=&type… So please someone with time and knowledge may have look (Tobias P. doesn't seem to have the time for this). If we can't menage to fix this until the Xfce release I'd like to know what you think could be a good and safe workaround (recommending power/storage groups?). Note: Gentoo seems also running into this pam/consolekit issue. Not sure about Ubuntu and Fedora(that does heavy pam configurations). -Andy

[arch-general] How to encrypt /home, so it gets mounted during boot

Hi, I've encrypted my /home partition (which lays on a raid), basically just for the fun of it ;). I'm now encountering a problem, which isn't that easy to solve as it seems to me :(. I've got the following setup: /dev/sda1 -> /boot /dev/sda2 -> encryption -> lvm -> / /dev/sdb1 -> encryption -> lvm -> /home Now I want to get /home mounted during the bootup. However I have the following order of hooks, which works fine for my root partition: "[...] encrypt lvm2 resume filesystems" Now, while the root lv gets mounted, the initscripts then tries to mount anything within /etc/fstab, but here lies the problem, because the lvm2 hook hasn't unlocked /dev/sdb1, because it is encrypted, and gets unencrypted only afterwards (/etc/crypttab). So what is the procedure here? Is there any easy workaround? How do you solve these issues? Best regards, Karol Babioch
