[arch-general] apcupsd or rtkit - Caused time to go haywire on shutdown/reboot??

Guys, Here is one for the brain-trust to consider. Something totally screwed up the time on my computer during an apcupsd commanded shutdown and the subsequent reboot resulting in a 479 Minute time disparity. I don't think this was handled on the first reboot after the power outage because after reboot, I worked for 20-30 minutes before the OS imploded rebooted automatically. I suspect the time discrepancy somehow carried through the boot and went along until some kernel mechanism totally went bonkers and shut the system down. In 12 years of Linux use, this is the first time I've seen something like this happen. What I can't explain is the 09:25:25 to 17:28:06 jump. The power was only out for 5 minutes and the box booted as soon as power was restored. The log entry after reboot that caught my eye was: Oct 18 11:19:01 providence crond[978]: time disparity of -479 minutes detected I don't have a clue what could have caused this time shift unless it was some spurious voltage issue. [arch-general] How to find if a file belongs to a installed package?

Hi, I have been looking but I haven't found a solution to check if a given file in my system belongs to any of my Installed packages. For example, in all my 3 archllinux machine I have a directory named: /usr/lib/libreoffice/basis3.3 85Mb I would not expect to have this directory as I'm fully updated and my current libreoffice is 3.4. Accordingly there also exists the directory: /usr/lib/libreoffice/basis3.4 335Mb I'm not an expert in the libreoffice package and therefore blindly removing the first, without knowing if it is really needed or it is just some directory during the updates, makes me feel unconformable. The command in question should be able not only to check repository packages but also locally installed ones although if it is not possible with the first will be enough. Hello, Why ghc 7.2.2 is in [testing]? People are planing to include it in [extra]? It's a "feature preview" release. It is not a stable release as far as I know. The haskell platform is scheduled to be released "late 2011" with the next stable version.

Hi, i was wondering if anyone using xdm gets /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup loaded when you log in? man page sais "After the user logs in, xdm runs the Xstartup script as root.", so between Xsetup and Xsession. but my /var/log/xdm.log only has: ... xdm info (pid 803): sourcing /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 xdm info (pid 803): sourcing /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole xdm info (pid 820): executing session /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession ... i also added `echo "wtf" > /tmp/wtf` to /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup, just to be sure (before the exec sessreg...) and /tmp/wtf doesnt get created. cheers .andre

Hello everyone, As it is now, the standalone vim cannot copy to and from the X clipboard. For a vim that does this, one needs to install gvim, which pulls a number of dependencies that you don't really need if you don't use the GUI. I guess the rationale for this is that people using vim in console have no use for X support, and the rest will be happy to use gvim. But I think many people -- at any rate, I'm one of them -- use vim in a terminal emulator in X. We don't want gvim, but we find copying and pasting to and from the clipboard useful. Any chance that the policy on compile flags to use for vim could be revised? Thanks Manolo --

[arch-general] coreutils fails "make check"

I tried to compile coreutils-8.14-1 from abs, with standard Arch CFLAGS. It fails the "make check" in one test, test-parse-datetime. I found a recent reference<http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/coreutils/2011-10/msg00099.html>to a patch needed to avoid false failures in this test caused by incorrect handling of DST. (I'm not on DST right now). Shouldn't the coreutils in abs be passing this test during the build? Is it safe to ignore the failure? [BTW, coreutils fails to compile with "-march=native" on an i5-2405s (native translates to corei7-avx plus a bunch of flags for sse4 etc.) but succeeds (except for that one test) by adding "-mno-avx" to CFLAGS. "Fails to compile" is an understatement. While compiling coreutils I briefly saw what looked like an old ROM debugger screen and then my display came back but all of my file systems were read-only. I think folks might want to add the "-mno-avx" flag to "-march=native" on most Sandy Bridge builds unless you know that the package can take advantage of the avx instruction set. Firefox has been known to fail at run time when compiled for "native" on Sandy Bridge.] -- sitquietly
