[arch-general] Possibility of including xorg input patch

Can this patch https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=33142 be applied to Arch's xorg? It solves famous problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 with broken keyboard input for users who use multiple keyboard layouts without any noticeable side-effects. [arch-general] Upgrading password hashes

I know arch tries to keep to upstream but their seems some discrepencies that you may or may not be aware of so thought I'd share. The crypt man page says glibc may not support blowfish (stronger than nists recommendation) and that seems true when used via the commandline (very short output). The arch wiki says you can use a library from AUR. There is also a sha512 arch wiki which says you should edit pamd.d/passwd from md5 to sha512 but the default seems to already be sha512, maybe it tries both as some distros default is now sha512 so no need anymore. It seems if you simply edit /etc/default/passwd to blowfish and reset your password, sha512 is used e.g. encrypted password beginning with $6 in /etc/shadow not $2 (blowfish) and logins work fine. I guess the /etc/default/passwd config file may be futurised or the config written before changing to SHA which was easier to implement and the wiki is out of date with the code?? -- Kc

[arch-general] Source control on /etc

What is considered the Arch way to have version control over the configs in /etc? I would like to be able to see at least a few changes back in my config history at the minimum. I have seen the package etckeeper and it does not seem to really fully be setup to work with pacman. Both AUR packages are very outdated. Would I just be best off just copying the ones I change and then push the changes to a separate dir that is under control of say git? What methods do you employ? Thanks for any info or tips on this. :)

[arch-general] shutdown problems

hi all, since a few days, i experience some problems on shutdown. i'm running kde and systemd on a fully upgraded system. when shutting down via kde controls (ctrl-alt-del oder button), i am logged off and presented the login screen, but no shutdown occurs. i tried to change the shutdown command from '/sbin/shutdown -h -p now' to '/sbin/shutdown -h now' but that made just no difference. if i use these commands on bash, it shuts down as expected, not showing the login screen. is this somewhat systemd-related? hints appreciated… georg

I remember that some packages were hold back and weren't moved to [community] on former [extra] cleanups, even though they didn't have a maintainer (I'm not sure about the reasons anymore; I remember some of them were used on gerolde or so, not sure if that is still relevant). You should probably double-check these. Apart from that, +1 to this idea. Sounds like a good idea as well, at least for packages that are easy to maintain ("easy" meaning that upstream releases don't require much more work than bumping the pkgver and updating checksums). [arch-general] Start a daemon, show a syntax error

No matter I manual start any a daemon, I always see a error shown on console: /etc/rc.d/functions: line 506: syntax error near unexpected token `(' /etc/rc.d/functions: line 506: ` done < <(findmnt -mrunRo TARGET,FSTYPE,OPTIONS /) But it seem that the daemon can run correctly, so should I need to fix it and how to fix it ?

Due to cronie doesn't contain an /etc/crontab anymore, there are losts of msgs of missing crontab as shown below in errors.log. > /usr/sbin/crond[1236]: (root) CAN'T OPEN (/etc/crontab): No such file or directory

[arch-general] Xorg 1.12 moves soon to testing for stabilization phase

New Xorg has Xinput 2.2, Mesa 8.0 and many major library updates. Expect some bugs and broken packages. Most recent Xorg stuff is used in Fedora RawHide for a while where fixes can be found. Most noticeable changes will be: - Mesa 8.0 drops 3D support for some chips. These packages are gone now: unichrome-dri, mach64-dri, mga-dri, r128-dri, savage-dri, sis-dri, tdfx-dri - I couldn't find patches to get Xorg 1.12 support in xf86-video-sisemedia and xf86-video-xgi. Both should be of very low interest (not included in FC at all). We might drop them if no fix can be found. - State of closed drivers: Nvidia has a beta pkg out with Xorg 1.12 support. Let's pray it's already in usable state. Catalyst (AUR) users will stay in the dark as on every major Xorg release for a while. -Andy
