[arch-general] mplayer steals system sound

Hi list, my system-sound (alsa) was working, until I installed mplayer. Now mplayer is working - but system-sound is gone. No way to regulate volume in alsamixer, it seems mplayer has occupied the system. How can I use mplayer _and_ have sound for youtube etc again? Thanks for any tips. cheers -- Thorsten

Hi guys, After switching from Linux Mint to Archlinux, my wireless card refused to show up in lspci. It DOES worked fine under Linux Mint, but .... Below is my output of 'lspci -vnn |grep Broadcom' : 10:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) My laptop is hp 6515b, with a touch panel for the toggle of wifi on/off etc. After a search in google I found the problem may be that the power of wifi has been shut down, and solution is to boot into windows and turn wifi on, because the touch panel will not work under Linux (as far as I know), And the I found a software named rfkill, hoping it will work. 'rfkill list' out put as follows : 0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes After 'rfkill unblock all', I get: 0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes And still no wireless card detected. So my question is, is there any way to power the wifi on without booting into windows? (in fact, windows has diappeared from my laptop for 3 years, and there is no partition on my harddisk supporting windows install).

Hello folks My failed login attempts aren't being recorded, and lastb shows no output. The permissions are correct: -rw------- 1 root root 0 Nov 15 06:39 /var/log/btmp Reading a previous message on the mailing list, i tried setting FTMP_FILE /var/log/btmp in /etc/login.defs. But this gives the following error (right after typing the username on a tty): configuration error - unknown item 'FTMP_FILE' (notify administrator) So two questions: 1. Why isn't the option being recognised, even though it is present in the man page for login.defs? 2. Hi .. Some i would like to do with the laptop when at home but not out and about When i am at home i would like the laptop to mount my NAS drive on boot always connect via ETH cable never wiFi but out if i connect via cable or wirless do not try to mount NAS drive , My thoughts Would it be possible to script it so that it checks for an specific MAC address before trying to mount the NAS as IP address would not work lots of 192.168.x.x networks out there Cheers Pete .

Hi Vladimir, In fact I've tried 'lspci -vnn | grep 14e4' before, and this is the output, JUST one row: 10:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM5787M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express [14e4:1693] (rev 02) If I just type 'lspci' I will not find anything related to wireless card either. About the kubuntu thing, did you mean this? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1349025 I've read it before open this thread. My problem is just the same as that of stark222000: it's wifi card CANNOT be powered on, not that driver thing listed in archwiki or linux wireless. He solved it through booting into windows. But I don't have windows installed and I don't want to install it anymore. So I opened this thread as 'how to power on my wifi card' instead of 'my wifi card dose not work', which will of course be classified as a driver issue. And if I missed anything after my explanation, plz let me know. Thanks! [arch-general] Best way to adjust cron.daily or updatedb execution time? (root's crontab?)

Guys, What is the best way to set the cron.daily items to run at 3 am. Currently they run at 3 pm which is a pain. I have checked the cron.daily entries and the other /etc/cron.x directories, but I can't find a time setting anywhere. I have checked man crond and crontab, but I didn't find a reference to setting the execution time globally for cron.daily stuff. I have added an entry to root's crontab: 0 3 * * * /root/cron/cron-daily Is this where this needs to go? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Unable to shutdown recently (not always)

Hello, recently I'm experiencing shutdown problems. I installed everything (except /boot) on LVM, using LXDM as the display manager and sawfish as the window manager. Usually I cannot shutdown, the computer gets stuck --- wallpaper is still there, panel is gone, so does other windows; the HDD LED may flash sometimes; neither NUM LOCK nor CAPS LOCK is responding. So I need to press the power button to force a shutdown, and, on next boot, filesystems will be recovering journal, looks like it got stuck before the filesystems unmounted. But this doesn't always happen to me, usually if the computer is used for a long time it will; but if I want to test what is the cause, i.e. startup -> do sth. -> halt, I cannot yet figure out what is the problem. All, I am having trouble building the new shadow (4.1.5) from ABS so that libshadow.so.0 is created and installed. I have tried modifying lib/Makefile.am like was done in 4.1.4: #Ugh, force this to build shared libraries, for god's sake sed -i "s/noinst_LTLIBRARIES/lib_LTLIBRARIES/g" lib/Makefile.am But that produces no pkg/lib at all in the build directory.
