[arch-general] Intel AES-NI module doesn't get loaded automatically

Hi, my hardware supports the AES-NI instruction set, which is a performance boost. I'm pretty sure that the appropriate module (aesni_intel) was loaded automatically in the past, which seems not to be the case anymore. I probably could place it in /etc/rc.conf or something like that, but before going for it, I would like to know why it doesn't get loaded automatically in the first place any longer. Is this something intentional or some sort of bug/regression? Maybe it has something to do with the switch to kmod a few weeks ago? Anyone else experienced this? Best regards, Karol Babioch

That thread at least confirms that two others will the same laptop are having the same issue. As for what the problem is, not quite sure yet but I will try reverting to a older kernel. Hi, I'm not a dev, so am replying on arch-general, but a TU who uses a lot of ruby on Arch. Thanks for thinking about this. I too have been trying to come up with my own sane way of using ruby - gems particularly - with Arch. I think it's worth separating out the "user" and the "admin" in this argument. To install a gem system-wide, you have to do something like "sudo gem install XXX", right? This is almost always a bad idea, IMO, and people hopefully won't do it at least during the normal run of working with ruby. Personally, I don't let gem mess with anything outside my home directory. And plain "gem install XXX" will not accidentally install system-wide, right? A while ago I was getting very frustrated that the version of rubygems bundled with ruby itself was so out-of-date so quickly, but 'gem update --system' is a very bad idea in combination with pacman. So, I spent a while hacking together this package, which installs the latest version of rubygems itself alongside ruby, system-wide: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=50346 It's hacky, but it works :-) I wish there was a cleaner way.

I am running into an issue I have never really run into in the past with my current laptop. Upon installing arch linux I reboot and face the following issue which hangs forever during the bot process: Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed [BUSY] I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with NVidia Optimus and I enabled NVidia Discrete mode in the BIOS. I cannot boot into my system after installation, however sometimes it will skip by this error and I will lose all keyboard input and cannot login as a result. My workaround for the moment is to put the BIOS into Optimus mode (Intel and NVidia cards are enabled) and use the Intel video driver. I have tried nomodeset during the boot process but no luck. Googling the problem i find most people get a timeout after 30 seconds to find out what is causing the problem, but my system hangs forever. Is anyone else running into this issue or experienced enough to help me find out what the problem is? I have been running Arch since August 2011 with no issues up until now. Any help is appreciated, -Rob

Hi all . Kmail seems to have developed a like for just vanishing like bang gone . I had to reboot the box this morning to get kmail to start at all as in power off reboot then it can up with no mails listed no inbox nothing another reboot and it came up ok but now just vanishes from the screen this was after yesterdays updates "pacman -Suy" it had been reasonably ok prior to that apart from the filters dont work very well (no where near as good as the non akondaified version Pete . -- Linux 7-of-9 3.2.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 7 08:34:36 CET 2012 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) 9600B Quad-Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Or does commitpkg fail to upload an architecture you actually specified? Just to be sure, commitpkg currently behaves as follows: 1. Iterates over all architectures that you specified in your PKGBUILD (unless you use "$commit_arch"). 2. Searches for package files for each of these architectures (and it looks in "$PKGDEST" if that is used). If it cannot find a package file for one architecture, it displays something like "Skipping $_pkgname-$fullver-$_arch: failed to locate package file" and skips that architecture. 3. Searches for signature files, bails out if one of them cannot be found or is invalid. 4. archreleases to all remaining architectures. 5. Uploads package and signature files. If it doesn't behave like that for you, you should probably file a devtools bug. [arch-general] Multi-audio player script-based control?

I use mpd for 'regular' music playing, but once in a while (like today, V-Day) I use other players (like Exaile) for various purposes. I currently use xbindkeys to bind various keyboard shortcuts to mpc next, mpc prev etc. Of course, finger memory means I still press those even though I'm currently using another music player (which results in two different songs playing). Anyone know of an existing script which controls the active player (so if I press my 'next song' keyboard shortcut and VLC is active, it receives the signal, if Exaile/amarok whatever is active, it receives it, if nothing is active it defaults to mpd)? Thought about hacking something up in bash but would like to check if something already exists, first.

Hey, guys, is there a way to set BUILDDIR in makepkg.conf to a place like /var/abs/mybuilds/$pkgname? I tried set BUILDDIR="/var/abs/mybuilds/$pkgname",but it didn't work,it builds in /var/abs/mybuilds,not in /var/abs/mybuilds/$pkgname.

I don't find download small files is slow especially when the mirror is at your country. Furthermore, my country namely Singapore only have one mirror and that one mirror using FTP. Arch-devs. Kindly do not delete FTP from the list. The mirrors list are user config and not everybody use the same mirror and it is up to us to use which mirror. So, I don't see a point on remove the ftp mirrors.
