Hi, Cpufrequtils 008 in [core] has long been orphaned and, as you know, actually deprecated upstream since linux 3.1 (http://kernelnewbies.org/Linux_3.1). Instead, there is cpupower (aka cpufrequtils 009) included in linux/tools and available in [community], which is stable at least in my experience. [arch-general] shebang for python scripts

Hi all, I've opened https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/28881 "meld uses wrong shebang" some time ago. The description reads: ,---- | meld uses "#! /usr/bin/env python2" as shebang. It should use "#! | /usr/bin/python2". `---- The bug has been closed as "Not a bug" and "Works fine as-is". I've tried to reopen it, which has been denied, with the following comment: ,---- | Reason for denial: | Avoid using virtualenvs or install pygtk in them. `---- The above is not a "reason for denial" but a workaround, and strictly speaking a bad workaround. A good workaround would be to "put no custom paths in front of the archlinux provided paths in PATH". I really do think the user should be able to install custom python versions in his home directory (be it through virtualenv or by compiling from sources) and put them in front of PATH without breaking random python scripts in /usr/bin. Generally I'm quite impressed by the good decisions and great work being made by the archlinux developers, but in this case I'm deeply disappointed and can't really understand the rationale behind this decision. Can someone explain it to me please? Please also explain why some programs do have a /usr/bin/python2 shebang and some don't! -- Cheers Ralf

Hello, please, consider the following output of part of mine /etc/passwd: $ sudo grep ':/:' /etc/passwd cron:x:22:22::/:/bin/false dbus:x:81:81:System message bus:/:/bin/false hal:x:82:82:HAL daemon:/:/bin/false avahi:x:84:84:Avahi daemon:/:/bin/false nobody:x:99:99:nobody:/:/bin/false dnsmasq:x:999:999:dnsmasq daemon:/:/sbin/nologin usbmux:x:140:140:usbmux user:/:/sbin/nologin These 'users' are not allowed to login: either '/bin/false' or '/sbin/nologin' is used as login shell (another question raises: why two variants? why not just '/bin/false' or '/sbin/nologin'?) but they home directoriy is '/'. I wonder why '/' was chosen for that? Is it possible to change home directories for these 'users' to, say, '/dev/null' or '/nonexistent'? The origin of my question comes from use of 'davfs': when used by normal user (being member of 'network' group) 'mount.davfs' refuse mounting to '/mnt/webdav' because '/' is home directory for some users. I found this 'workaround': http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/WebDAV (sec. [arch-general] ASLR and PIE wider adoption.

With more and more distros and even android employing gccs -fpie for building packages, should Arch consider enabling it. For my users it would mean less programs being killed by the grsecurity kernel due to text relocation attempts. No complaints yet as I have a sandboxed flash browser but eventually there may be one about x264/mp4. For everyone else it would mean a more secure system due to better use of ASLR. Are complications like static binaries an issue arch simply hasn't the time to deal with (does gcc work around them automatically now?) and do users care more about adding upto a few seconds to the start up time of some programs on x86 over security?

I'm not sure if [1] is the official announcement, but I'd like to point out that # pacman-key --init gpg: /etc/pacman.d/gnupg/trustdb.gpg: trustdb created gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found gpg: Generating pacman keychain master key... seems to hang forever unless you run 'updtedb' or something so the entropy problem should be covered, as suggested in [2]. [2] mentions "SigLevel = Required" while [1] tells you to set "SigLevel = PackageRequired" - I assume because the databases are not signed yet. Hi . How can i return full function to the findutils and locate , It was the best utility for the job and now has been eroded by the supposed replacements that are a complete failure . Hello, DBus broke for me after last upgrade [0]. I'm using testing repository and have: dbus 1.4.20-1 dbus-core 1.4.20-2 dbus-glib 0.98-1 dbus-python 1.0.0-1 but disabling it and downgrading (via pacman -Syuu) to: dbus 1.4.16-1 dbus-core 1.4.16-1 dbus-glib 0.98-1 dbus-python 0.84.0-1 doesn't fix problem (not entirely at least). On testing Gnome starts in fallback mode, chromium and wicd-curses says: Failed to call method: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1 After downgrading, wicd-curses (which uses dbus-python) works fine, but other things are still broken. dbus-daemon is present in process list... What can be wrong, where should I look? [0] List of upgraded packages: http://pastebin.com/CYbTTaUQ Only: [2012-04-11 21:59] upgraded dbus-core (1.4.20-1 -> 1.4.20-2) looks suspicious to me, but downgrading only dbus-core to 1.4.20-1 doesn't change anything. [arch-general] EFI-Support (Arch on a MacBook Pro)

Hello, I am planning to install Arch on my Late-2008 MacBook Pro in the near future, because I like the Arch Way and the BSD-style better. (I used to run FreeBSD for many years before I had to use Mac OS X. Hence the MacBook.) To get back to use Linux I installed Linux Mint 12, because it seemed simple. I now have one Partition with OS X, one for Linux and one small Swap. I installed rEFIt from OS X and then installed Linux Mint. What I have been wondering about now is, if it will be possible to install Arch without rEFIt and the Mac OS X at all? I read a lot in the wiki pages, but all I found was that if I install Arch only with EFI support I will have to install GRUB2. And on the page about GRUB2 I read, that I will have to bless GRUB2 from OS X... If that is necessary I might keep rEFIt and OS X as it is and only replace the Mint installation with Arch. Hello! Last upgrade of udev [2012-04-12 20:16] upgraded udev (182-1 -> 181-9) Makes my gnome-shell start in "alternate" mode. And last upgrade of consolekit [2012-04-12 20:26] upgraded consolekit (0.4.5-2 -> 0.4.6-1) makes that when I insert a DVD, I receive a message of error saying that the operation is not allowed (sorry, I was in a hurry and didn't copy the error message). Downgrading both of them solved the problems. Anyone else noticed this? x86_64 Guillermo Leira
