Dear all, as I was configuring a conky window on my desktop, I decided to add some precisions and tips for configuring the *.conkyrc* file in the Arch WIKI. Reading any /var/log file needs to be root, thus making difficult to run any home config file with read access to log files. My turnaround is to *$chown root:log /var/log* then *$usermod -aG log username*. Security wise, I do not know if this can bring serious potential breach in the system. If yes, please tell me as I will NOT let this turnaround in the WIKI. What would be a safer solution to read the log files in my conky window? Regards. **

[arch-general] x86_64 kernel 3.4.3-1 fail to boot - initramfs unpacking failed: uncompression error

Guys, Updating an x86_64 box, I ran into an error I've never seen before with the 3.4.3-1 kernel. It hard-locks at the very start of boot with the keyboard lights flashing. Basically the first line of the boot says: Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... done. Booting the kernel. [ 0.480811] Initramfs unpacking failed: uncompression error [ -.547776] Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel. See Linux Documentation/init.txt for guidance. [arch-general] Source control on /etc

What is considered the Arch way to have version control over the configs in /etc? I would like to be able to see at least a few changes back in my config history at the minimum. I have seen the package etckeeper and it does not seem to really fully be setup to work with pacman. Both AUR packages are very outdated. Would I just be best off just copying the ones I change and then push the changes to a separate dir that is under control of say git? What methods do you employ? Thanks for any info or tips on this. :)

[arch-general] What causes the 3-5 sec delay before :: running early hooks (udev)?

Guys, After recent updates to 3.4.3 and systemd-tools, etc., I have a new delay on boot. The system just seems to sit for any extra 5 secs or so with a blank screen after switching from grub to start booting. The delay happens before the first line: :: running early hooks (udev) is written to the screen. Does anybody know what is causing this? initramfs decompression? New systemd-tools udev stuff? After updating 3-4 boxes, this delay period is notable. Just curious whether this can be tweaked or eliminated. Thanks for any info. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] Note on TDE - gcc 4.7.1 resolves kwrite crash

All, Just a quick note that update to gcc 4.7.1 resolved an infinite loop introduced when TDE was built on gcc 4.7.0-x resulting in a kwrite/kate crash on line-wrap. Confirmed with fresh TDE archroot build on 6/19. TDE 14.0.0 release upcoming. Date not set, but expected in next couple of months. (number versioning change from 3.5.14 to 14.0.0 due to backwards compatibility with 3.5.X being dropped as TQt3 executables underwent name changes to prevent conflict with Qt4 when both installed in /usr) Will update the wiki shortly. -- David C. Following the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Software_RAID_and_LVM#RAID_installation it says "This tutorial will use SYSLINUX". However, towards the bottom of the page it says: "Once you have successfully booted your new system for the first time, you will want to install Grub onto the other two disks (or on the other disk if you have only 2 HDDs)" and proceeds to show how to do this. This is very confusing (to me, anyway). Is this really what one is supposed to do, even though it says that SYSLINUX will be used in the tutorial? Perhaps it's something to do with the difference between grub and grub2, but in any case to someone just following the instructions it isn't at all clear why this section talks about grub instead of syslinux.
