[arch-general] GDM and/or PulseAudio mute my sound

Working from the command line in a text-only console using espeakup, all is well, and sound works as it should. However, starting GDM mutes my sound card. If I go back to the text console and run sudo systemctl start alsa-restore Again, all is well in the text console until I login with GDM. I am expecting to hear Orca speaking at this point, but I hear nothing. In order to get Orca to speak, I must run gnome-terminal from within GNOME and then do sudo systemctl start alsa-restore again. Once I do this, I have sound until I shutdown the computer. I have tried xdm and lxdm also, and while they themselves don't cause me to lose sound at the text console, I am for some reason unable to login and use GNOME from either of these display managers. I also tried commenting out load-module module-device-restore in /etc/pulse/default.pa, as was a possible work-around in a much older version of PulseAudio that mentioned /etc/pa.conf, which I translated to /etc/pulse/default.pa since there is no /etc/pa.conf, but this also doesn't solve my problem. I should note that although I am using systemd commands to restore sound, this problem is not related to systemd, as I was experiencing the same issue before I migrated to full systemd yesterday. I am currently running Arch on a USB flash drive connected to a Dell Optiplex from about 2003 or 2004, but I can't find the exact model, as lshw is only giving me Dell Computer Corporation as the vendor name with no model number, and it doesn't even say Optiplex anywhere, although I remember reading it somewhere a couple of years ago. The computer was given to my family several years ago, but it's basically been a spare box until recently when my newer and better designed box passed away due to human error. This is why I unfortunately don't have the full information about this machine. The sound card is listed by lspci as 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) and uses the snd_intel8x0 kernel module. I am currently running linux-lts 3.0.40-1, pulseaudio 2.1-1, pulseaudio-alsa 2-1, alsa-utils 1.0.25-3 and gdm 3.4.1-2. I would appreciate any help anyone can provide, and will be happy to answer any questions I may have missed here. ~Kyle

[arch-general] Help mounting Windows drive

In the past I have been able to mount my Windows computer using the following command: "mount -t cifs -o username=USERNAME,password=PASSWORD //192.168.1.107/Users/gumper /mnt/share/" Now when I try this I receive the message: "Unable to find suitable address". I am able to ping the IP address without any problem. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks, Randy

Hi all, I started with Arch a few days ago and mentioned that there is only one small installation guide file. What do you think about to add more installation guide's (wireless, network, x.org ... ) ? Add some guide-generator script into archiso repo? ---- Thanks. Sorry for my bed english)

hello, I have a small VPS and I want my few users (~10) to be able to manage their sub/domains. I don't care about the UI, either command line interface (via jailed ssh) or web ui. I would really like to have only SFTP and not any FTP daemon. however, if ftp is so much easier, then ok, ftp daemon... [arch-general] cups 1.6.1 doesn't detect usb printer

Hi, I'm stuck with resolving my printer issue. Maybe someone here can help me out. Long story: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148474 Short version: I reinstalled cups, removed all leftover files in /etc, /usr which wasn't owned any package. Samsung unified driver got replaced with splix-svn 307. Now cups doesn't see my usb printer. On a laptop with clean cups install it works. What interesting that the printer is recognized, lsusb, dmesg shows it. hi,everyone one day I found my google chrome always force close without prompt code when I clicked any option in the settings. I have tried to uninstall, delete the related file in /opt and then reinstall, also I have tried to install chromium, updated the system, but got no result. how can I do to fix this problem?

[arch-general] is it possible to disable bold(bright) color under console?

when some application write, for example, \e[1;31m msg \e[0m to console, is it possible to just ignore the "1;" which asks to use a bold(bright) color and just write \e[31m msg \e[0m instead? i don't like bold colors, they make eyes suffering. i tried setterm -bold off, which doesn't work; and infocmp to dump the terminfo file, remove the bold entry, use tic to save the setting, which only take effect on applications that use the ncurses library. is there any way to solve this problem?

Dear list, pulseaudio is started with my X session via /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/pulseaudio. [gabx@magnolia:~]$ ps aux | grep pulse gabx 687 0.0 0.0 501896 6652 ? S<l 15:12 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start My issue is with pavucontrol, the GTK volume control tool. When I start pavucontrol, the volume control windows opens but hangs with this message: Establishing connection to Pulse Audio. Please wait... and never open. I see in the log file : [pulseaudio]pid.c : Daemon already running. Why can't pavucontrol access to pulse audio?? This issue didn't appeared when I booted with sysvinit, but it came when using systemd. TY for help

When an update today run ldconfig, I noticed that there's something wrong, caused by an update from yesterday. Hello all, i just did install uswsusp from AUR (uswsusp-git), in order to use s2both to provide suspend_hybrid on my laptop. (cause s2both process seem much more useful to me than the default PM_HIBERNATE_DELAY way of doing suspend_hybrid). Technically, everything is working fine with s2both : s2ram and s2disk working well, resume from {RAM,disk} doing ther job. But after resume, (ram or disk), i got very poor performances during maybe 30 second or a minute, with load average getting up to 12 or 15 maybe. resume from ram using s2both is going way slower than regular resume from ram (kernel) those two issues are really annoying, quite nullifying the benefits from s2both over kernel suspend... My question is : is there any configure options somewhere i can have missing, or some way to drastically improve those issues ? thank you all in advance, -- Mathieu R.
