Hi :) to help those who have "green" HDDs that can't keep asleep when gvfs is installed, I replaced the dummy package for gvfs I had installed by the real gvfs package and try to solve this issue by another method. There absolutely in no need to install gvfs on my machine, but since there's a "green" EU Regulation, soon or later more people will experience that their "green" drives will spin down and up again and again. The assumption is that it's udisks that wakes up sleeping drives, for gvfs seemingly configurable by /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors/. This assumption might be wrong. $ systemctl status udisks udisks.service - UDisks Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/udisks.service; disabled) Active: inactive (dead) $ cat /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors/udisks2.monitor [RemoteVolumeMonitor] Name=GProxyVolumeMonitorUDisks2 DBusName=org.gtk.Private.UDisks2VolumeMonitor IsNative=true NativePriority=4 What are "IsNative" and "NativePriority" for? I still search myself, but any hints are welcome, to disable _what ever_ wakes up such "green" drives. Without gvfs those drives keep asleep. Regards, Ralf

[arch-general] Intel SNA artifacts in Firefox

Since the xf86-video-intel update that enabled SNA by default, I've noticed that some areas of some web pages (mostly flat backgrounds) in Firefox suffer from heavy graphical corruption, as if those areas are being used as rendering buffers elsewhere: bits of web pages from other tabs, etc... It goes away when I scroll the page. It happens regularly, every couple of minutes or more. This is on a Dell Latitude E5520 (Sandybridge i5) with KDE. I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this? [arch-general] Pip2 commands throw error

Hello, Since upgrading to version 1.4.1 in July of python2-pip, I have been receiving this Exception on the commands I execute. Received an update to version 1.4.1-1 today and the error persists. This is a desktop machine and I get the same error on a server running Parabola. I tried a manual install of pip-1.4.1 and distribute on Slackware and everything runs as it should. Have not tried the manual install on Arch yet since I would prefer to use the packaged versions. Many install scriptlets include the leading slash in file paths, e.g. post_install() { update-desktop-database -q gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor } while some strip the leading slash, post_install() { update-desktop-database -q gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor } Would this make a difference with `pacman -S --root <path> <pkg>`? If not, is there any case in which it would make a difference?

[arch-general] Systemd inside LXC: user sessions are not automatically removed on logout

Hi, I have been experimenting with archlinux guests inside LXC containers, and noticed that when a user logs out, systemd-logind won't remove the session. This is reproducible on all (archlinux x86_64) host-guest, testing-stable combinations. Here is an example (fserv1 is a container hostname). The only systemd units masked inside the guests are: systemd-udevd-control.socket, systemd-udevd-kernel.socket, systemd-udevd.service, and proc-sys-fs-binfmt_misc.automount. [arch-general] no mp4 playback with VLC

Hi, folks, I downloaded a video file from YouTube which makes my players hang. VLC neither plays audio or video but just remains as if no file was in the playlist (in fact it is). When I start vlc (vlc -v) from console and try to play that video file vlc writes to the console mp4 stream warning: unknown box type tft (incompletely loaded) When I feed Google with this message I receive just similar results ('tft' seems to be individual to my problem) but not a solution. ****************** When I try to play the file with GNOME Mplayer it works but without the sound. I already checked in the preferences that I don't use the internal volume control of Mplayer. Does anyone have a hint for me ? I am unsure if a codec is missing because VLC would tell me that ?!? As Mplayer can decode the images I think the file is not corrupted. [arch-general] Question about repository updates and atomicity

I'm trying to understand what may and may not go wrong between package uploads to a repository, repository synchronization via rsync (which seems to be the preferred method for mirrors to get their stuff) and downloads via pacman. Assume a developer uploads a new version of two packages to a repository. My understanding is that uploads delete the older version of the uploaded package currently in the repository. (unlike other package management systems e.g. debian's where multiple versions of the same package can reside in the same repository). An hour later, a mirror repository starts rsycing. While the rsync is ongoing, a user uses pacman to download both packages from the mirror. Question: what mechanisms exists, if any, to avoid that the user gets the old version of package A and the new version of package B? (assume the rsync is still ongoing while the download occurs) It seems the "safe" way of doing the rsync would be to take down the mirror during the critical section (when all old versions are removed and the new ones put there instead), and restart it afterwards? Or is there something somewhere that I'm not seeing? The debian guys probably keep the old version(s) around for exactly that reason... Any insight very much appreciated ... Cheers, Johannes.

Hi :) when I try to build current linux-rt I get "No space left on device", resp. df shows "tmpfs 100% /tmp". What can I do? Add "tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,size=3G 0 0" to /etc/fstab? What should somebody do, assumed there are only 2 GB available by RAM? [arch-general] LightDM hangs when checking the password

Hi :) I wonder if it's an issue with linux-rt 3.10.6-rt3 or randomly something else went wrong. Perhaps caused by 3.10.6-rt3 or not, but a security process or similar seems to be locked on my machine. After installing and booting into the 3.10.6-rt3 an update hanged when checking the keyring. I had to remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck and could update using 3.10.6-2-ARCH, but when I now try to start a session for 3.10.6-rt3, LightDM hangs when checking the password, I only was able to start one session for this kernel. After downgrading to 3.8.13-rt14-1-rt there isn't this issue anymore and even with 3.10.6-rt3 there were no issues when I want to log in booted in kernel 3.10.6-2-ARCH. In don't know what to check. What log searching for what information. At the moment I simply use 3.8.13-rt14-1-rt. Regards, Ralf
