[arch-general] Smartcard troubles on Arch

Dear Archers, I am trying to get my Gemalto USB Shell Token V2 (GPG-Smartcard-Reader in a USB-Stick) to work on Arch. I've set up Udev in the way I did successfully in Ubuntu 12.04.LTS. However, no success. I am still trying to figure out where the trouble lies. I can never see the card using gpg --card-status But sometimes I see its fields when using pcscs_scan. Possible culprits: pcscd, which sometimes gives errors, gpg's USB support? Has anyone had success in setting up this reader or similar smartcard readers? Or had similar troubles? I would love to hear from you. Best, Mathias

Can this patch https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=33142 be applied to Arch's xorg? It solves famous problem https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 with broken keyboard input for users who use multiple keyboard layouts without any noticeable side-effects. [arch-general] FS#41424 - Virtualbox 4.3.14, USB doesn't work flawlessly

Hi, I experienced Virtualbox 4.3.14 x86_64 as broken, when I tried to sync an iPad2 with iTunes running on a XP SP3 guest. I only tested it with USB2 enabled, since it worked with 4.3.12. Usually I use the packages virtualbox, virtualbox-host-dkms, virtualbox-extension-pack and I add the guest additions, that fit to the used vbox version. Because I wasted much time with trying to use 4.3.14, I did an incomplete downgrade to 4.3.12 yet, since I'm short in time, but even with virtualbox 4.3.12-1 virtualbox-host-dkms 4.3.12-1 no extension pack, no USB2 and with wrong guest additions, version 4.3.14, I get rid of the issues. I will complete the downgrade on my machine ASAP and IMO the community packages should be downgraded for the repositories too. Do others experienced issues with Virtualbox 4.3.14 USB too? Since I'm short in time I only reported the bug to https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/41424 I didn't find a related bug, just 4 completely other vbox bug reports. https://www.virtualbox.org/search?q=4.13.14&noquickjump=1&ticket=on results in "No matches found." https://www.virtualbox.org/search?q=usb&noquickjump=1&ticket=on gives tons of hits, no time to care about them right now Regards, Ralf

Hello, There will be a class taught by nisstyre called "Introduction to Scheme and Functional Programming". It will be on Friday, September 5th at 8pm UTC (4pm EDT, 9am NZDT) in #archlinux-classroom on the freenode network. The class is expected to run for 1-2 hours. Learn the basics of Scheme and how to write practical, useful functional code, while having fun! Both beginners and advanced practitioners are welcome to attend. There are no prerequisites but it helps to have some basic programming knowledge - like variables, conditionals, looping, and an idea of what a function is. Nisstyre is a long time user of Arch Linux (approx. 6 years). He is a programmer who previously worked in a startup. Currently he is a student doing academic research. Hello, all The contents of my /etc/fstab are as follows: /dev/sda3 / btrfs rw,relatime,space_cache,autodefrag 0 0 /dev/sda1 /boot ext2 rw,relatime 0 2 /dev/sda5 /home btrfs rw,relatime,space_cache,autodefrag 0 0 Whenever I start my laptop up, /home takes ~17-19 seconds to mount, as is evidenced by this line in the output of systemd-analyze blame: 16.467s home.mount Running df -h on my system, I get: Filesystem Total Used Free Use% Mounted on /dev/sda5 422G 364G 53G 88% /home However, running du -h --summarize /home, I get: 318G /home If I use xdiskusage to see the partition, it shows 46.48G as /home/(permission denied). I tried doing this using sudo, and I still have the same problem. I have neither subvolumes nor any snapshots on this volume. Is there any way of recovering this space? Hi Once upon a time, it was said that for each interface, only the first .link file matching was taken into account. However, as I was investigating all the new features of the latest release, I couldn't find this affirmation. Was it fixed ? Yamakaky

[arch-general] fstab and root filesystem

Hello, I have been playing with the initramfs, and I noticed that the root filesystem is mounted in read-write mode in early init. Since, by the time /etc/fstab is available, the filesystem on which it resides (presumably, the root filesystem) is already mounted, and mounting it is anyway early init's task, not real init's (because the real init cannot be found without the initramfs), there seems to be no point in keeping it listed. I haven't found anything about this, but commenting out the pertinent line hasn't broken anything. Is it fine, or are there any reasons for it to be listed in fstab? Regards, Kalrish

The kernel periodically calls wait() which reaps the zombie process and frees its memory. I was wondering if a possible attack could be mounted by the zombie process when it is inherited by root.
