[arch-general] Unlocking the screen through fprintd

Hi all, I have been trying to get fprint working properly with screen lockers for months and have yet to find a working solution. I am using i3wm without DM. Login on the TTY and sudo work properly: They ask me to swipe the finger and then ask for my password if that didn't work. However, every screen locker I have tried that supports PAM at all (i3lock, xlockmore, xscreensaver, kscreenlocker) all ask for my fingerprint AFTER I typed in my password. Is there no way to make them check for my fingerprint first, and then for my password? Does anyone here do something similar? Hi, perhaps I'm "mad", but I wish to get a German manpage for bash and at least an English manpage how to write bash completions. Does anybody know a source for exotic manpages? [arch-general] system crashes when starting network connection

Hello, recently I have come across a weird problem regarding full system crashes under certain conditions. It seems somewhat random but the trigger always includes starting a network connection after sometime with no network connectivity. The only applications that have triggered the issue until now are firefox (after starting normaly) which triggers the second I click on a bookmark to open a website (no network conenction until that second). The other application was mutt, which triggered the moment when I fetched mails and the status bar said "looking up mbox" or something of the like. The result of the trigger is a full system crash, showing the current screen. Using Ctrl+Alt+F1/7 does not work. There is no trace in the logs, neither in the journal nor did I find anything with dmseg. The only way to get out of this is by hard reset. I have tried to replicate the bug but so far I was not succesful. I have no idea how to analyse the issue further. Do you have any hints on how to produce continious detailed logfiles or something of that sort to find what is wrong? Thanks

[arch-general] fluxbox/xscreensaver xterm unresponsive upon screensaver cancel?

All, I'm not sure where to start searching on this problem. I have a server with fluxbox and xscreensaver enabled. If I'm running xterm when the screensaver activates, if I return after a couple of hours, the xterm is unresponsive. (instead of a normal solid black-box cursor, it is a white block cursor with a thin black outline) At this point, the xterm in non-responsive and I must kill the window with the [X] window control (top-right) and restart a new session. I note that if another application is left running, like firefox, then the xterm doesn't seem to hang or disconnect (or whatever it is doing). I don't know whether to chase this as an xterm issue, an xscreensaver issue or a DPMS issue. Has anyone encountered this before? If so, any solutions, or did you narrow it down to one of (xterm, xscreensaver, DPMS)? Thanks for any suggestions. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

[arch-general] sporadic strange PC speaker sounds

Hey hey, occasionally I hear a short "tune" on my pc speaker. It's too unexpected and too short to try lsof to see which process is using the pc speaker. The sound is reminiscent of old console games. It's several short notes, all in a blues pentatonic. this has been an issue right from the installation. The only special daemon running is brltty, which at least didn't use to make such sounds in the past. Can anyone suggest a process or a method of finding it? It only happens a couple of times a day, but this could be a problem when recording with the microphone. On the other hand, I can't turn off the pc speaker, since I rely on BRLTTY and other signals in non recording contexts. Hey hey everyone, I'm new to Arch Linux, but not to Linux as such. I tried to set my terminal to 800x600 (80chars by 30 lines or there abouts), but without success. lspci reports my graphics card as: 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 / nForce 630a] (rev a2) It's onboard on my asrock n68 s3 ucc . I've tried the following approaches: 1. fbset on the commandline. The following error is reported: $ fbset 800x600-60 ioctl FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument The same happens for -70, -72 and -100 and all other modes including 640x480-* modes. 2. On the kernel commandline using vga= option with vga=0x0303 3. With KMS as suggested on other forums and in the Arch Wiki, using: video=VGA-1:800x600@60 This also included inserting the nouveau module into initramfs using mkinitcpio.conf, followed the the appropriate mkinitcpio command. 4. Using GRUB's gfxmode setting and the GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep option. fbset has always reported the resolution/mode as 1024x768 My system doesn't have any GUI installed (yet), if that is of any consequence. hi everyone i am trying to replace my laptop drive with another, to clone the laptop drive to a second drive i followed 'Full system backup with rsync' from the wiki 1 create a partition table and filesystem on the second drive 2 mount the drive to /mnt 3 rsync -aAXv --exclude={"/dev/*","/proc/*","/sys/*","/tmp/*","/run/*","/mnt/*","/media/*","/lost+found"} / /mnt before i swap the drive in the laptop with the second drive do i chroot and run the following commands to configure the bootloader and do i need to do this from installation cd ? # grub-install --target=i386-pc /dev/sdx # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg shadrock

Has anyone successfully used LDAP as a dynamic back-end for bind 9.11? Unless I'm reading the release notes/new features pages incorrectly the bind-dyndb-ldap plugin has been rolled into ISC's official release and I shouldn't have to mess around with patching/building it from source. Yet I get the following errors upon startup; named[9937]: loading configuration from '/etc/named.conf' named[9937]: /etc/named.conf:23: unknown option 'dynamic-db' named[9937]: loading configuration: failure named[9937]: exiting (due to fatal error) systemd[1]: named.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
