[arch-general] Disable vboxadd.service & vboxadd-service.service after guest additions included in 4.15?

All, I use vitrualbox-bin (AUR) along with ext-oracle extension pack referenced in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox#Extension_pack. I have followed the addition of the guest-addition kernel modules to the 4.15 kernel, but I do not know how to handle that addition regarding what changes are needed in my arch guests. Specifically, since the guest additions are included in 4.15, but not in LTS, how do I disable the load the guest additions modules when booting the VM on 4.15, but not when booting LTS? [arch-general] Why does Arch still use the GTK2 version of xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin?

Hello, I apologize if this is not the appropriate place for starting such a discussion, but I felt I needed to voice my opinion. I think the GTK3 build of the Whisker Menu plugin is very stable and find it very odd that Arch still uses the antiquated GTK2 build of the plugin. The GTK3 build will add many noticeable improvements for end users, including better support for desktop themes. Replacing the old version will also make it easier to ditch an old toolkit like GTK2 from our systems.

[arch-general] Tips for a stable GNOME Shell?

Good evening, I am writing here since I do believe people here might have found solutions already to my problems. Sadly, I am the problem, as I love GNOME Shell (ops). Jokes aside, I love its interface and behaviour; although, it is really hard to use it on a real-context basis for me. What it happens is that if I execute RAM-consuming applications, GNOME Shell behaves really badly, swapping a lot with memory. The usual scenario is me trying to send some e-mails, while I have Visual Studio Code and Firefox for some coding; usually, this leads to huge slowdown, up to making the system unusable. This doesn't happen when using a GNOME-friendly i3 session, executing by far many more RAM-consuming applications (such as running Franz with multiple services, Telegram Desktop and others). I got some good boosts from the following actions: - Disabling almost all the Shell extensions, except for my 'essential' ones. - Using a X11 session instead of Wayland - Tweaking swap and VFS parameters (there is a web article referenced in the ArchWiki which is really good) So I have two questions: 1. Am I nuts? Did I do something really bad to my GNOME Shell without knowing that? How could I repair my setup? 2. If this is it (GNOME Shell is TOO heavy), is there any lightweight DE that offers something similar? I would need at least the search within apps and files for sure. [arch-general] Virtualbox under KDE plasma

Hello, I recently tried KDE plasma after 5.12 update and it is running smooth. However I am experiencing two problems with virtualbox. 1. Virtualbox applications do not start unless QT_QPA_PLATFORM is set to xcb. Under plasma wayland session it is set to wayland. 2. When a VM is launched, if it is maximized with Host-F, it loses all keyboard/mouse interaction and has to be killed from the plasma session. Anybody has seen this? Should I report it upstream? I don't know which is responsible for what. I put together an lftp script and tried running the script to download a torrent and am getting strange output. So you want to have vboxadd-service and vboxadd systemd services not starting on Linux kernel versions 4.15 and above? [arch-general] Can't connect to the Arch Linux website

Had this problem for a few days, first noticed when I tried searching for a package. my ip address is 172.7.224.99. Is there something going on or is it something from my end? only 2 things I could think of but seemed unlikely was that my server was sending spam (which would be bad because it would mean someone broke in, but I didn't notice anything in the logs) or from checking out the ABS tree from the git server, but I've been doing a shallow clone for the initial checkout (git clone --depth=1) and a shallow fetch for updates (git fetch --depth=1, followed by a git reset --hard) to try to avoid stressing out the git server. Was that still too much?
