Hi, I have vmware workstation player 14 on Windows10 host. Installed arch from 05.01.2018 iso, lightdm and xfce4 desktop. I added vmware-tools from AUR[1] to have 2D hardware acceleration. Somehow vmware won't let me use polish keyboard in X11 applications. Alt-gr + a (ą) and rest of polish letters works under xfce-terminal but does nothing in geany or other X11 apps. So I copied vmdk to VirtualBox, regenerated kernel image using mkinitcpio -p linux and start VM under VirtualBox. After logging into xfce polish keyboard works as expected - without any configuration changes. Anyone has idea what could be wrong? [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vmware-tools/

[arch-general] Video descriptions with VLC and MiniDLNA/RealMeadia?

Hello, I'd like to see some descriptive text for videos streamed into my LAN by minidlna using a VLC client. I've already set some tags in the mp4 files (including title and comment tags). While the filename is replaced by the title, I cannot see the the provided comment, not even when selecting "information" from the entry's context menu. I don't know, if this is a problem of the server or the client, so I'd be glad if somebody could help me. Kind regards Peter

[arch-general] How to access mythes or other thesaurus from the commandline?

Hey hey, is there a tool in the Arch repositories, including AUR, that can access a thesaurus like mythes from the commandline? I've read about an example program coming with the source distribution of mythes, but couldn't find anything on my system. Before finding and installing sources, I'd much rather install a maintained package. Hi, I'm intentionally using the title from Nov/Dec 2016 [0] to ease googling. I decided to check the status of this, and there is still 325 packages with only md5sums in [core] and [extra] (I didn't check [community]). Below results are generated by the attached script... [arch-general] scsi_mod.use_blk_mq (revisited)

Greetings again, I've been continuing to fool with this. I'm hoping someone smarter than I can shed a little more light on it. Here's what I've discovered since my last post..... It seems that on my system, it takes more than the allowed 10 seconds for the disks to appear. I removed "quiet" from my boot command line and it timed out looking for UUID=xxxx..... . So I looked for it and it definitely was not there. None of the sdXx devices were. I looked again, and yet again (ls /dev/sd*) and after about the 3rd or 4th attempt they showed up. So then, I mounted /dev/sdc3 to /new_root/, typed 'exit' and after a warning about possibly failing to run as a user instance, it booted. Any clues as to why this occurs? I'm trying to find a way to increase the pre-boot disk probe timer if possible. So far, all I've found are tips about speeding up the boot process, not slowing it down. Hi, After a `pacman -Su', I run this ~/bin/oldpkg script #! /bin/sh sudo lsof -n +c0 | sed -n '1{p;d}; /DEL/{p;d}; / (deleted)$/{p;d}' | g -v ' /(SYSV00000000|dev/shm/org\.chromium\.......|memfd:pulseaudio|tmp/#[0-9]{5,7})\>' | sed '1{h; d}; 2{x; G}' to show open files that are deleted. This helps spot things like Postfix needing a restart, or xfce4-terminal running with old libraries, that kind of thing. A lot of the time I can selectively restart things, log out and back in, etc., to avoid a reboot. Quite often, these three data files appear, /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache /usr/share/icons/hicolor/icon-theme.cache /usr/share/mime/mime.cache triggered by /usr/share/libalpm/hooks. Based on the updated packages, I'm guessing a lot of the time the before and after content is the same, but the file has been re-created and moved in place of the old one anyway. A cmp(1) could avoid the unnecessary churn, though I see it's more complex when an external command is exec'd rather than the re-build done directly. Even so, things like update-mime-database(1) used in update-mime-database.hook has a `-n' option that looks like it might often avoid the new inode. -n Only update if MIME-DIR/packages/ or a file in that directory is newer than MIME-DIR/version. This is useful for package pre- and post-installation scripts. Can churn be reduced? Hello, I'd like to use /etc/rc.local and noticed, that there's something called systemd-rc-local-generator which should somehow pull in rc-local.service on boot, according to its man page. But on my ArchLinux, the service file isn't there, and neither does /etc/rc.local run on boot. Is the systemd in ArchLinux packaged correctly? Greetings, Just updated my system (pacman -Syu) and was dumped into an emergency shell on reboot. Seems my boot command line option (scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=1) was no longer acceptable. LOL. I haven't seen anything that indicated this was deprecated or obsolete. System is fairly simple. Asus CrosshairV - Formula Z + FX9590. Main disk is a 2T Barracuda and a handfull of WD Raptors on an LSI-9260. System comes up fine removing the boot option. [arch-general] Broke Arch trying to change graphics driver

Hi, So here's what happened, I was facing issue with proprietary nVidia driver (screen tearing) so I thought I want to switch to the free one, so I uninstalled nvidia with "pacman -Rs nvidia" , then I thought might as well try a different kernel and installed zen. Now when I boot into either kernel I am seeing "Starting display manager" then a black screen. I can login to tty2 , but no display comes up. I want to switch back to free driver, with preferably zen kernel. What should I do? Thanks in advance.
