All, After my thread of 1/3/19 "[arch-general] VirtualBox 6 on 4.20 - Anybody seeing guests become unresponsive after several hours?", I have been working the issue on the vbox-users list. The problem effects VirtualBox when accessed over ssh, and Windows guests run --headless. The Virtualbox 6.0.0 console coredumps when accessed via ssh, while windows guest run --headless throws select/read error (under strace) bringing the guest to a crawl. With the release of 5.2.24 today by oracle, I built and downgraded both virtualbox-bin and virtualbox-ext-oracle and the problems are completely gone. Further, the release notes state the 5.2 branch will remain supported through 2020 as 6.0 matures. If anyone experiences similar problems with virtualbox when accessed over your LAN, then the 5.2.24 release is an option I have confirmed works (as well as all modules building under Linux 4.20.1, Bash 5 and Readline 8, etc..) I have not tried the now 6.0.2 yet, but as nothing addressed these issues in the changelog, I suspect they remain. Will check this weekend and if fixed will report back. -- David C. [arch-general] Kpartx should be in the repos and archiso for enabling encrypted GPT install

To mount a root GPT partition which resides on an encrypted disk, one needs the kpartx tool to make the mapping for the partition (the kernel does not independently make those for partitions on device mapper maps, which is what a dm-crypt decrypted device is). Thus kpartx needs to be on the Archlinux installation ISO to enable that kind of setup. It would of course first be necessary for an Archlinux Developer or Trusted User to adopt kpartx, so I hope there is somebody willing to do this ...? Note that kpartx is a common utility and in its own package across a lot of distributions; like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, ... Note: it may be possible to use losetup instead of kpartx so as to make a loop device instead of a device map, but that would come with an overhead? Another alternative setup, perhaps more widely used, is having encrypted LVM. While this does not require kpartx, LVM may be undesireable because of its complexity and requiring multiple userspace daemons beside Udev. [arch-general] [Xfce-terminal] Cannot remove entries from history

Hello, I've got the following rather suspicious problem with xfce-terminal: After removing entries from the history (using "history -d" or "history -c"), the entries are obviously buffered. When I close the terminal and the open another, the history is available again - for some reasons I do see this as a security risk. Can I remove the buffered entries somehow? Kind regards Peter

[arch-general] X logs me out from tty on close

Hello everyone, I had a rather interesting problem recently. I dont have any display manager and I open desktop environment from tty when needed. Previously when I logged out from Xfce or closed down X server, it would put me back on my tty session. Now when I do the same, it also logs me out from tty and I must login again. Is this the expected behaviour after some xorg or kernel update? Or did I mess up something? I tried with both `startx` and `startxfce4`. And to be sure that this is not an driver related problem, I also tried with `nvidia-xrun`, same results. Thanks in advance.

[arch-general] Gnome Shell suspend-then-hibernate

Good evening, inspired by a previous thread when Gnome 3.30 introduced suspend-then- hibernate I did setup hibernation on my laptop. By the time I did this Gnome reverted to the standard suspend, probably by the critics received. So I added the following line to my logind.conf IdleAction=suspend-then-hibernate This worked fine until recently the system won't no longer suspend then hibernate when Gnome Shell is running. A manual systemctl suspend-then- hibernate works as expected. I've checked in dconf editor and there's no option to choose suspend-then-hibernate. I for my self find this function quite neat since the laptop is quite often sitting long periods without being in use. Any ideas if there's possibility to gain this function with gnome back? [arch-general] python 3.5 with or without python 3.7

hello members (and happy new year), my system is up to date and works with python 3.7. for a specific need, I want to install python 3.5 but cannot go down because its installation breaks an dependency: :: installing python (3.5.2-1) breaks dependency 'python>=3.7' required by libreoffice-still. what do you think is the easiest way to achieve my goals ? regards, lacsaP.
