Hi, I'm looking for some advice trying to pinpoint why or where my system has becoming almost unusable slow. Searching the web I've found some hints but nothing precise enough. Maybe it's a failing HDD, but I'm first posting what I have until now in the hope someone can give some advice. Superficial symptoms are a general slowness. I'm using just IceWM and `startx` to initialize the GUI, and even logging into my account previous to that takes almost a minute to get done. Then any application I launch takes minutes to just start (from IceWM to firefox, from qtox to pcmanfm or geany, etc.). Even navigate the folders tree with pcmanfm takes 10 or more seconds just to show any folder content... Boot messages font issue

There is a large, about 2M in size, screen shot at https://img.net9.ga/d9eYOM6/xbV+yBu/BootFontsIssue.jpg . Each text line is duplicated in a shifted manner because the picture was taken by a camera. The dupliacation of the lines is not the problem. It does not occour in reality. The problem are the rectangles enclosed in the red ellipse at the bottom of the picture. Have you encountred such a font issue? Any comments? Simple Scan asking for root password

Good morning, I have set up a new machine with Gnome Shell and a network printer/scanner. When executing simple-scan it searches for scanner and then asks me to enter my password to gain admoin rights. I never encountered this behavior before and wonder if there's a way to stop it asking for the pw? THX Frank

Mailing list quirks

Dear mailing list admin, while I still received emails from the mailing list, I couldn't log in. After (re-)subscribing I can log in again. Please add "[arch-general] " to the subject. Some mailing lists don't use such an identifier in the subject, but a lot of mailing lists for good reasons do. It's apparently possible to prepend the list name and to keep the DKIM signature intact or they break it, but it doesn't matter. I don't know. Why is this identifier useful? For example, if you have got a virtual search folder with a filter, that searches the email bodies for "x11" in folders for different mailing lists, it can be very helpful, if the subject lines mention "[arch- general] ", "[Alsa-user] ", "[Evolution] ", "[lubuntu-users] " etc. to get a first overview. For several reasons such an identifier can be useful. For each of those reasons somebody probably has got an objection, how to do things different, so that the identifier is unneeded. Yes, it's not needed, but it's useful/helpful for some people, in some cases, while there's unlikely a good reason to be annoyed by "[arch-general] ". Regards, Ralf

Mail List Admins: Following up to my prev post (arch-general) about DMARC rejections from arch-general from domain zoho.com ( I checked it too has 'p=reject') My own messages to the list are also being rejected by our border mailer with same dmarc rejection - so indeed, I suspect something is not quite right with the list configs. Can you all please check that incoming mail to lists from domains with 'p=reject' DMARC policy work ok. Seems not to be working from what I see. thanks.

All certificates missing after update

Hello, After my last update, I noticed a strange issue: I could not do anything that required HTTPS. I could not use curl, update the system etc. I eventually traced the problem back to ca-certificates. I noticed that /etc/ca-certificates/extracted/tls-ca-bundle.pem , which although still existed on the system, was just a completely empty file while on my laptop it was filled with certificates. What I had to do was copy over the missing certificates from my laptop, and then it was working. But what I noticed is that previously I had downgraded some ca-certificates packages (specifically the utils, and mozilla one I think),and when I upgraded the system the certificates were all once again missing, and I had to replace them for a second time. I am not educated at all on the ca-certificates package. I assume it has something to do with SSL but I know little beyond that. I therefore can't deduce whether this issue is the fault of a bug, or if I have done something wrong. I'd like to know if anyone has experienced this problem as well, or if someone has knowledge that might be of use. Thanks. James Crake-Merani

What does: Future build infrastructure for Arch Linux "We decided on supporting the x86_64-v3 microarchitecture" Does that mean Arch will break on anything older than Haswell for Intel will no longer be supported on Arch? Or am I missing something? SUSE going to ALP is doing the v3 baseline for it's "containerized" Micro Leap, but what does this mean for Arch. With SUSE, it means just that, if you have an i7 Sandy Lake or older -- your just not invited to the party. That seems completely counter to what Arch should do for a main distro. -- David C. [arch-general] Openbox screen locker

Folks: Was running i3wm, just installed Openbox. As with i3, after a certain period of time, the screen goes black. So far so good. However, when I move the mouse or hit a key, now I get some sort of xfce screen locker. It has a banner at the top with my system name, the date, and a lock symbol in the far right corner. In the center middle is XFCE's mouse icon. And it insists I enter my password. I don't like or want this program running, but I don't know what's spawning it. There is nothing which calls an XFCE program in my Openbox config files, or the global ones in /etc. According to htop, this program is apparently a child of systemd --user. This isn't helpful. Can anyone provide assistance in finding and fixing what's calling this program? Paul -- Paul M. [arch-general] mkpkg : A new tool to auto rebuild packages when makedepends have updated

When building packages (makepkg + PKGBUILD), It would be useful if there was a way to easily rebuild the package whenever a make dependency is updated. One can do this manually of course, by bumping the pkgrel and rebuilding. To make it easier I built a tool to do that for me. For example: When a tool chain used to build a package is updated, it's good practice to rebuild those which use that tool chain. For example, when gcc, cargo, binutils et al are updated packages using those tools should also be updated. While static linked libraries surely don't demand a rebuild to function, because the prior, older library is part of the binary itself, it's still a good idea to rebuild it. This will pick up fixes, including security related ones, as well as improvements. Of course, it's always sensible to confirm that the application properly builds and works with the newer tool or library.
