Bring ARM into the fold?

Is it time to bring Arch Linux ARM into the fold of Arch Linux? The GNU toolchain of ALARM is now very behind, and the developers are dead silent about why. There little to no response on pull requests on the github page, and while it seems like there is activity on their PKGBUILDs repo, it almost seems to me that it is some kind of automatic jobs being run. Their forum is broken and has been broken for quite some time as well. -- chs

[arch-general] System terribly slow

Hi, I'm looking for some advice trying to pinpoint why or where my system has becoming almost unusable slow. Searching the web I've found some hints but nothing precise enough. Maybe it's a failing HDD, but I'm first posting what I have until now in the hope someone can give some advice. Superficial symptoms are a general slowness. I'm using just IceWM and `startx` to initialize the GUI, and even logging into my account previous to that takes almost a minute to get done. Then any application I launch takes minutes to just start (from IceWM to firefox, from qtox to pcmanfm or geany, etc.). Even navigate the folders tree with pcmanfm takes 10 or more seconds just to show any folder content... Laptop Running Hot

Greetings, Lately (the past week or two?), my laptop has been running much hotter than usual, as experienced by my lap and reported by conky and sensors, even after a reboot and before I start X11, and when just idling. Previously, it had been running around 35 to 40 degrees Celsius. Now, it's more like 55 to 60. If I shut the lid and walk away for 10 or 15 minutes, it cools down. But when I open the lid and don't do anything else, the temperature rises again in a few minutes. This happens even when top reports 100% idle, and uptime shows the load average at 0.1±. After multiple lockups attributed to the nvidia 550 drivers a few months ago, I use nvidia-535xx-dkms. I run pacman -Syu daily. Sometimes, problems like this go away with the next kernel or driver(s) update, but that hasn't happened. I would include logs and version numbers, but I'm not sure where to start. :-) I checked the BBS, but I didn't immediately't see anything related. Any ideas? Thanks, Dan

Plasma upgrade from 5 to 6

Hi all I have finally gotten round to updating my rolling release installation after a long delay. One of the final cycles in this catch-up [1] pulled in an upgrade from Plasma 5 to Plasma 6 Some things stopped working for me after that and I want to share with you what and how I solved them. 1. Graphical environment doesn't start because video driver is not loaded (dkms) I have a GTX 750 and even though dkms does a successful compilation and installation, this driver no longer automatically loads during startup. There may be other, better solutions, but what I did is [I'm using sddm] is: systemctl edit --full sddm in the section [Service] add an entry ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/modprobe nvidia-drm save and quit then reboot 2. no RDP in krcd -> install freerdp2 3. Arch Admins, The last package update notification I received was xdg-desktop-portal-kde 6.1.3-1 x86_64 sent Fri, 19 Jul 2024 10:11:46 +0000 and arriving Fri, 19 Jul 2024 05:16:15 -0500. Steam Accessibility

Howdy, In Arch, Steam is completely inaccessible with Orca, nothing reads at all. It was fixed briefly last year, but broke again after about two weeks. I figured this was the company's doing, but I recently found out that it works on Void Linux. I have a couple of friends who run Void, and they can access it just fine with the --bigpicture flag. The weird thing is, as far as I know, it only works in Void, not any other distro. I know it's not working in Debian, Ubuntu, Slint, and Fedora. My question is, does anyone know what Void is doing different from literally everyone else to get this working, and is it something I can replicate in Arch?
