Preventing bots/agents from subscribing to arch mailinlists
by Jauchlander 14 Oct '26

14 Oct '26

Hi, I would like to know if there is any way of preventing bots/ai agents from subscribing to arch linux mailinglists, or if you are already looking into this, or if it's in the plans? It's a bit annoying all those emails asking to unsubscribe, and most really look like bots... :/ Hope all you real people have a great day :) Cheers! Jauchlander. P.S. Sorry if this subject was already discussed and a decision was already made. Feel free to ignore this. I'll understand.

Heads up - Firefox 157, Youtube pegs 1 core at 100%, unwatchable, profile irreversibly upgraded on 1st start
by David C Rankin 09 Oct '26

09 Oct '26

All, Update tonight pulled in Firefox 157. It will not play youtube video (e.g. BBC Dark Energy documentary). When it attempts to play the video, one CPU core is pegged at 100% continually (Isolated Web Co) and the page takes minutes to load. The Isolated Web Co process stays pegged at 100% very much appearing like a race condition. Logically, I simply downgraded to 156 still in the cache only to find my profile corrupted by the 157 update and unusable with 156 anymore. If you rely on youtube, you may want to add firefox to the Ignore line in pacman.conf until this gets figured out. If you launch it once, your profile will be irreversibly updated to the 157 format and then you are stuck without your passwords, etc.. if you have to downgrade. Sure wish I would have known. Frustrating... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

F/LOSS Meetup in London | 2026-10-24
by Adam Tazul 08 Oct '26

08 Oct '26

Evening folks! Please forgive me the sin of originally using the wring list to send this lol (originally went to Arch-Events) Some good friends of ours (Polarian and Matthew Fennell) are hosting a F/LOSS meetup in London later this month, up at The George pub in Belsize Park[1]. Address: 250 Haverstock Hill Belsize Park Greater London England NW3 2AE The Nearest station is Belsize Park (Northern Line), once leaving the station turn right and walk straight until you reach the pub. The next nearest station is Hampstead Heath (Mildmay Line), which might be faster for some people living in North London. When you leave the station turn left and walk towards the royal free hospital, turn right until you reach Hampstead Green walk through Hampstead Green until you come out on the main road, then turn left and you should see the pub. OpenStreetMap: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/292183282 Time: Saturday 24th October, 1pm onwards RSVP: not required Finding us on the day: Polarian will wear the EuroBSDCon 2026 (Brussels) T-shirt[2], and will dump some stickers on the table. You can also look for a Beastie, the FreeBSD Mascot[3]. We have not put a reservation into the venue, as we can't predict the numbers which will turn up, however the pub is large and has decent beer on tap. Looking forward to seeing some of you lads there -Adam --- [1]https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/greater-london/george [2]https://2026.eurobsdcon.org/ [3]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_Daemon

Re: sudo -k && makepkg - was: AUR Malware that still presents as of now (30 July 2026, 22:00 UTC)

Hi Ralf, Thank you for your response. I'm sorry if you misunderstood "the list" as the mailing list. No, I was not talking about the mailing list. Rather, I was talking about the package list. Yes, I do get the job anyway. Thanks for the response. Test, please ignore. trying to verify I can post to the list

Please ignore. I am trying to verify I can post to _the list_. I am not trying to find out if I can send email. Rather, I am trying to find out if the list will receive a message sent by me. And if it does, whether it will post it to other members, and save it in its archive.

ALPM from GNOME Software
by Óscar García Amor 08 Oct '26

08 Oct '26

Hello folks, I'm sending you this email just to let you know that I've created a few small software tools, basically, I wanted to bring Pacman's package management to GNOME Software. The main reason for this is that I sometimes install Arch Linux for friends and family who aren’t very tech-savvy, and you can’t just tell them that to update, they have to run a command-line command, not because you can’t put it in a script, but because they often forget or don’t know how to tell if it worked properly. At first, you always think about creating a tool that simply handles the updates, but in the end, I think it's best to integrate it with what already exists so as not to “reinvent the wheel.” That's why I ended up creating two pieces of software. The first one[1] (in Rust) is the heart of the system; basically, it exposes ALPM via D-Bus. This allows that D-Bus connection to be used by plugins. This development also implements a connector with PackageKit in case you're simply a user of that tool. The second[2] is a GNOME Software plugin that directly uses the first implementation so you can install, uninstall, and update. The system is designed to be easy to use and to prevent inconsistencies; therefore, if there are pending updates and you want to install a package, it will update the machine first before installing it (to avoid dependency issues that may not exist or may not match). Obviously, this system won't save the day if you need to make any manual changes, but it's useful for day-to-day use for users who don't want to deal with pacman. That said, it doesn't work with AUR, only with binary repositories. If you have an unofficial personal repository in pacman.conf, it will work without any problems. It has been tested and is stable as of now; however, due to dependencies related to a change that would need to be made to Rust's ALPM[3], the versions currently published on AUR are -git[4][5]. Note: alpm-dbus[4] is a base package that bundles three packages: the DBus daemon itself[6], a CLI tool[7] for testing and making direct calls, and the Packagekit package[8] mentioned earlier. That said, any ideas are welcome. To wrap up, I'd like to mention that I did this with the help of AI. I'm saying this because I know there are people who don't like it, so now they've been warned. Greetings. Does arch-announce work?
by Ralf Mardorf 08 Oct '26

08 Oct '26

Hi, "Mkinitcpio >=42 requires manual intervention for TPM2-based unlocking of LUKS devices" from 2026-09-22 was not worth an announcement via arch- announce? https://archlinux.org/news/mkinitcpio-42-requires-manual-intervention-for-t… https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/arch-announce@lists.archlinux.org… The mailing list issues were already fixed the week before. Could it be that arch-announce is still having problems, or has the problem come back? Regards, Ralf
