Changing $HOME for all users

Hello, this is not very arch related, but I did not know where to post it else - and my system is arch. I have a couple of users on a remote server that I mount with fstab to /home. I quickly realized that that isn't a good idea and wanted edited my /etc/fstab to mount homes to /media/homes and edited my nslcd.conf file to say: "map passwd homeDirectory "/media/homes/$prefix"". Everything worked fine, but when I rebooted, the $HOME variable remained the same, and I could not access my initial home. Can anyone tell me, how to change $HOME for all users to point to the new $HOME (/media/homes)? Thank you.

What is lag time for packages showing up in RSS feed??/

All, Devs, I watch the rss feeds for arch packages to know what is coming/ready for update. I've been watching the 7.0.8 kernel in core testing waiting for it to show up in the core rss packages feed to then update. However, I've been surprised to find the packages already on mirrors but not yet reflected in the rss feed. I generally watch the kernels, so that is the one I'm most familiar with a lag-time on. Again today, checking 'checkupdates' on a box, the 7.0.8 kernel is already on my update mirror, but still not on the feed, e.g. $ checkupdates ... linux 7.0.7.arch2-1 -> 7.0.8.arch1-1 linux-docs 7.0.7.arch2-1 -> 7.0.8.arch1-1 linux-headers 7.0.7.arch2-1 -> 7.0.8.arch1-1 ... Does anybody know what the expected lag-time is with the rss feed? It just seems odd to have the package on the mirrors before the update is shown on the rss feed. I'd almost expect the opposite - for the rss feed to show the package move from testing to core before the propagation to all mirrors happens, just due to the various mirror update times. Strange enough I thought I would bring the issue up in case there was something odd going on with the rss feeds? Not a complaint, just an observation. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Building for aarch64 rpi 4 and 5 namcap PKGBUILD PKGBUILD (gcc) W: Reference to x86_64 should be changed to $CARCH PKGBUILD (gcc) E: Split PKGBUILD needs additional makedepends ['libisl.so'] to work properly # create cc-rs compatible symlinks # https://github.com/rust-lang/cc-rs/blob/1.0.73/src/lib.rs#L2578-L2581 for binary in {c++,g++,gcc,gcc-ar,gcc-nm,gcc-ranlib}; do --> ln -s /usr/bin/$binary "$pkgdir"/usr/bin/x86_64-linux-gnu-$binary done that should be this ln -s /usr/bin/$binary "$pkgdir"/usr/bin/"$CARCH"-linux-gnu-$binary pkgname array has lib32-gcc-libs which causes error on aarch64 makedepends array has lib32-glibc and lib32-gcc-libswhich causes error on aarch64 After these fixes it builds on aarch64 -- Hindi madali ang maging ako

vim-9.2.0437 -- inserts 'PP' at start of every new file, downgrading to vim-9.2.0388 resolves the issue

Arch Devs, vim-9.2.0437 for some reason includes `PP` at the top of each new file it creates, e.g. $ vim foo This just started with this version update. Downgrading to vim-9.2.0388 (and vim-runtime-9.2.0388) resolves the issue. Does this need a bug? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

ALARM: Archlinux for ARM

I have just about completed my project of building Archlinux for the raspberry pi 4 and 5 I have gotten to the point where I can run LXQT as the desktop. It works quite well and is much faster than ArchlinuxArm install as I have compiled all the packages with these CFLAGS: CFLAGS='-mcpu=cortex-a72 -O2 -pipe -ftree-vectorize -fomit-frame-pointer' CXXFLAGS="-Wp,-D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--sort-common -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-z,now \ -Wl,-z,pack-relative-relocs" LTOFLAGS="" I have the following packages that fail to build that I could use some help with argyllcms fbida icmake libtpms mupdf sequoia-sq If someone here on the list has successfully built these on the arm platform it would most appreciated if they could pass me their changes from the x86_64 PKGBUILD and patches if required. After I do some general cleanup of my PKGBUILDs I am thinking that I will make them available on codeberg. -- Hindi madali ang maging ako

What caused Firefox 151 to change from Dark to Light theme when set to Auto?

All, On first start of Firefox 151, the general theme (tab bar, url bar, etc..) change from Dark to Light theme color. The setting for theme in Firefox was set to Auto, as it had always been. To restore the dark theme, I had to affirmatively select the Dark theme in settings. The desktop is fluxbox. Firefox has always presented a dark theme there. No changes were made to the desktop or desktop theme. Does anyone know why Firefox would suddenly switch from using Dark to Light theme with the setting for theme in Firefox set to Auto? Is it the xdg-desktop-portal package? E.g., Required By : xdg-desktop-portal-gtk Optional For : firefox As a test I tried removing xdg-desktop-portal, but it fails dependency checks now: checking dependencies... error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies) :: removing xdg-desktop-portal breaks dependency 'xdg-desktop-portal' required by xdg-desktop-portal-gtk As of 4/20/2026, I had no xdg-desktop-portal on my system as I was comparing openSUSE and Arch checking an GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs bug thrown by python/matplotlib on openSUSE. See: https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/users@lists.opensuse.org/thread/6H… So is the requirement for xdg-desktop-portal install new on Arch, and was it intended as a hard dependency on all desktops, even the old ones like fluxbox? If so, was this what changed the Firefox theme from Dark to Light with Auto set? I have no need for xdg-desktop-portal, and don't really want it. If it's the problem, it's inclusion as a hard dependency seems contrary to the KISS philosophy of Arch? What say the experts? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
