Tried vga=0x318 ? This will give you a 1024x768 framebuffer that should work on almost any hardware (unless it's older than 10 or 15 years).

Thanks for the idea. Just tried that... it has an effect - blank screen - no console text at all. I guess that means I should keep trying combinations.
