That's an interesting trick. It yields:

I had already checked the preferences and hard-coded the shell. And this says it's running. So why don't I see it?

Sorry, I don't have definitive answer. You can check ~/.xession-errors and $ journalctl -bp warning for clues. (If you use GDM .xsession-errors might have been moved recently.
