I know it's split into systemd, libsystemd and systemd-sysvcompat. The split is there to break a cyclic dependency, and doesn't provide the flexibility offered by Debian's systemd split including breaking up libsystemd. They have it set up so you can run things like systemd-logind without systemd as init (or installed at all).
