The main issues the way I see it are: Moderation - How would we prevent spam/abuse? Pastebins can quickly be subject to spam, scams, abuse and more. Lifetime - Especially if there will be more than just text, it will eat up resources quickly. Though, even with just text it can take up a lot of space, especially if a lot of people use it. However, having a TTL on everything can hinder people looking for help on BBS and other channels. If someone posts a solution using the pastebin service with a TTL, someone later down the road would just hit a 404 when looking for answers to the same issue. Also, as Levitating writes[1], rustypaste does not *have* to be the solution to go for, I think it would depend on the main use cases. I feel like having something accessible with the terminal *and* accessible with a frontend would be a good solution. Having a simple frontend, kind of like how Hastebin used to be, would honestly be really cool and I would love something like that again as I've missed it. Hello again,
Frankly, I find the topic of discussion brought up in the last 3-4 emails to be counterproductive and off-topic from what I intended to discuss in this thread. That being said, I’d like to thank Robin Candau for steering the conversation in the right direction and clarifying some of the wrong assumptions/misconceptions.
In my personal opinion, to move forward, we need to discuss the pros and cons of such a service and the best possible way to host it; to wit, I’d love to hear the reconsiderations of Anthraxx, Jelle, and Foxboron on this, based on my previous email. :)
I brought this up to Arch Linux because I think having such a service would be pretty cool. I’m also open to other suggestions — feel free to drop a comment on the issue: <https://github.com/orhun/rustypaste/issues/326> :)
Best, Orhun
