Samba is growing up fast. It is long known upstream ( http://bugs.debian.org/474543 ) and already anecdotal: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2009-December/152549.html
I just read the debian bug, it would be interesting to have a status update after one year : 1) there was a big size increase between 3.0 and 3.2 , how does 3.4(.6) compare to that ? 2) whats up with the librpc/gen_ndr "Patches welcome" ?
