However, that's not the average use case and that doesn't mean it must be off for everyone, it will remain "better safe then sorry" by default for the reasons i pointed out.

If the kernel boots, isn't it possible to use the sysctl "kernel.panic_on_oops" to disable the panic if it is really necessary? https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sysctl/kernel.txt --- Andy
