In http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11016 JGC claims: "Static libraries aren't needed to build static binaries. The makefiles contain hardcoded references to the .a files, which is wrong."
I think there are some hacks that accomplish that, but generally, if you want to build something static, you'll want the static libs. But JGC of course might know something I don't :) I'll reopen the bug to find out... --vk
