I have found that the syslinux.cfg was not automatically updated to see the new kernel.
I moved /sda1/syslinux/syslinux.cfg to another place and mv /sda1/syslinux/syslinux.cfg.pacnew /sda1/syslinux/syslinux.cfg
shouldn't this be done automatically?
No. Configuration files are never overwritten. But pacman warns that "the new syslinux.cfg was installed as syslinux.cfg.pacnew".
What everyone seems to miss that it is not necessary to change anything - everything should continue working if you just update and reboot.
